Y2K Print Playsuit and a Summer Blonde Hair Refresh.

Brightening up my hair for summer and sharing this playsuit in a fun Y2K print.

Let’s get weird. As much as I live by the “classics never die” motto, I gravitate toward anything super funky and fun. Well, this outfit takes that cake! I mean, who honestly thought I could resist this Y2K print in the form of a matching matte satin playsuit? (Precisely no one.) It was my first purchase after discovering this eclectic + empowered boutique, Lala.

This set feels like a dream; it’s glorified pajamas and I don’t even care. We’re taking loungewear to a new level (and out on the town, even) with this outfit. The material is so soft, super lux, and the fit is the breeziest of breezy. Even though the coverage is maxed out, we shot this outfit in 80-degree KC humidity and I stayed cool.

And I’m sorry– did you say yin yang and smiley faces? I had to see if this could work. 2010’s slam dunk, thank you very much. The whole outfit is such a vibe, all I needed to do was add a heeled sandal– this one from Shein is on the money.

Probably the best part about this outfit? It’s so much, but it’s so easy. All the volume + the loud print do the heavy lifting for you, no styling effort required. Major accessories? Don’t need ’em. Added layers? This is a warm-weather outfit, no jackets or blazers need apply. You just pick your shoe and go. It’s that easy!

Fresh Summer Blonde with Shear Texture.

As the weather gets warmer, I start itching to brighten my blonde. While I’m not on the road to platinum like I was in 2018, going lighter for summer is standard protocol for me. Hair refresh time! I swung in to see my hairstylist, Stephanie Holle, for just that. (KC friends, you can see Stephanie’s Instagram here with shots of all her amazing work, plus DM her to book!)

My hair styled (by Stephanie, of course, because you know I don’t have the skill or the patience) right after my appointment

What I love about this look? It’s warm and buttery, but there are enough cool tones woven throughout that it doesn’t look too warm (or yellow). We had been working on adding dimension throughout the winter (which means working in lowlights so there is variation between the light and dark), and while I wanted to go lighter + brighter, I didn’t want to lose that dimension. I also wanted to lighten my base (aka my roots) significantly but I didn’t want to lose that rooted, live-in vibe. Stephanie took all that into account here.

The curls in all their summer glory.

After living the blown-out life for a few days, it was back to the curly side of things. You can see how I get these voluminous, 90s-esque waves right here in my tutorial post. I wear my hair like this 99% of the time; the only time it’s blown out is when Steph does it for me at the end of a blonding or toning session, no joke.

The way I style my hair adds a layer of difficulty for Steph because it makes the highlight placement tricky. Most stylists use their client’s part to guide where to weave in the bleach to create a natural, sunkissed look– but I don’t exactly have a part. Not only do I wear my hair mega-flipped on one side of my head, but I also flip it back and forth throughout the day. This creates the need for several foiling placements on either side of my head so that no matter how I’m wearing it, the highlights are shining through. (High-maintenance hair client?  Yep.)

You can really see how much brighter it is when you compare the before and after shots.

Steph also sent me home with a deluxe sample of the K18 leave-in repair mask with instructions to use it on my hair right after I got out of the shower, let it sit for 4 minutes, then add whatever other products to style. The promise? Damage repair (as a bleach blonde, I need this!), strength restoration, and mega softness. Brought to you by the same company that owns Olaplex, K18 builds on that protective technology. The No. 3 Hair Perfector delivers similar results, except you have to wash, apply the No. 3, let it sit at least 10 minutes, then rinse. This is more of a hassle than just using it as a leave-in that you don’t have to wash out– which means I’m way more likely to use K18 more often!

I just finished up the deluxe sample (I got 4 full uses out of it) and will definitely be purchasing the full size. It’s stuff, yes. But going (and staying!) blonde isn’t exactly cheap, so I want to protect that investment with products that really get the job done on the repairing + strengthening front. This stuff works!

    1. They’re super legit! Olaplex is the brand that helped me go lighter without damaging my hair (my stylist used it as part of our lightening process) and it’s a miracle!

  3. My brain. When I first saw “Y2K,” I read it as YSL and I was like whoa. Okay. This is a new direction for them.
