Breaking Out the Velvet: Black Blazer Edition. | LSR

Another Velvet Blazer with Wide-leg Jeans.

I can’t quit velvet blazers and debuting a new denim trend: wide-leg jeans.

KC has been in a deep freeze for over a week– just looking at these pictures makes me cold. (They were thankfully taken on a 50-degree day right before the super cold air arrived.) Exposed hands and feet right now? No way! But it’s time to talk about wide-leg jeans. Just the vest, they’re back in a big way.

I’m wearing a pair of affordable wide-legs here today with a white camisole and a black blazer. Yes, that blazer is velvet. Yes, I know I just did that a few weeks back. No, I am not ashamed. Velvet is a vibe, baby!

I wanted to keep that dressy vibe going, so a pair of classic black patent pumps were my shoe of choice. They help to balance the casual vibe of the wide-leg jeans (especially with that slit in the knee).

Have you heard the youth on TikTok talking about how “skinny jeans and side parts make Millennials look old”? I have so many issues with this, haha. First: please try middle-parting this massive head of curly hair. Not really an option. Secondly: while I love that different denim styles are in (like wide-leg jeans and straight-leg styles), the skinny still has its time and place. Third: I really don’t need to take fashion advice from the generation that gave us the Tide Pod Challenge, you know what I mean?

My final point: trends are cyclical. Like the vest– an 80s trend– and wide-leg jeans–a 90s trend. Most pieces come back around. So while skinnies might not be the denim du jour, they’ll be back. Calm down, children. Also, those Mom jeans you love? That trend was started by Boomers. Nothing is original; it’s just a modern version of a trend from a previous time period. I’m just not here for fashion shaming; wear what you like, whether it’s “on trend” or not. What matters is that it makes you feel good!

  1. Hahah well give it a few years and the millennials will soon be wearing side-part and skinny jeans! So entertaining though to learn about what they think is old/out of fashion. The laughing crying emoji is apparently also outdated, and here I am using it daily hahah ooops. Anyway, love this outfit! Velvet and jeans are such a good duo. The cami top is gorgeous too, such a great balance! Xx

  2. Keep on keepin’ on with the velvet, and loving that blazer! I just can’t with the Gen Z comments on our style – they literally have no idea that they’re repeating what we wore growing up. I’m rockin’ skinnies in tomorrow’s blog post with pride.

  3. I love that blazer I would def wear it on repeat! And I don’t know what those kids on tik tok are talking about! A lot of my preteen and teen aged students actually still wear skinny jeans lol 😆

    1. I’m like “why come for skinny jeans?” like what is the point? Wear what you like, don’t criticize others, live your life, lol.

  4. Girrrrrrrrrl this outfit looks amazing on you! I am short so wide leg looks really silly on me. I just bought my first pair of mom jeans from American Eagle (they aren’t here yet) so I pray they don’t look stupid on me too. Because all the other girls make it look so cute!

    1. You are so kind! I’m not that tall at ALL (5’5), so I usually make sure to grab a shoe with a heel (either a true pump/heeled sandal, or a heeled booties). This adds length and keeps you from looking too wide. 🙂 I’m sure the AE mom jeans are gonna look killer on you!

    1. It’s so funny when a generation thinks they “invented” a fashion trend. No, you revived it. Someone else wore it before, DECADES before! Lol

  5. I have a velvet moto jacket that I just adore. This one is so gorg and I love the wide jeans with the skinny black heels! I saw that article and laughed through all of it. How are we to wear OTK or tall boots if we don’t have skinny jeans?

    1. I love the idea of a tough moto jacket in lux velvet! So fun!

And RIGHT- try wearing those thigh high boots with your 501s lololol.

    1. Yes! I’m all for people wearing what makes them happy, regardless of if it is “age-appropriate” or whatever. Fashion should be fun and you shouldn’t have to give up a style because a younger generation has an opinion about it!

    1. Millennials AREN’T OLD. It’s so wild to me. We’re not exactly young, either, but that’s okay. Wear what you like and what makes you feel good, regardless of your age or who is telling you not to!

  6. Ashley you are epic! That line about not taking advice from the Tide Pod Challenge generation had be laughing out loud! That blazer is everything! Love the satin detail! And you are rocking those wide leg jeans too!

    1. Lololol, I just can’t with these kids thinking they invented anything but crazy poisonous challenges, hahahaha. Like, do your thing kids, wear whatever you want, but please don’t act like you were the first.

    1. Girrrrrl, I am frozen to the bone right now! It’s supposed to start “warming up” starting today– which means it’ll be in the 20’s. Lol, how long until spring???

  7. LOL You tell ’em, Ashley! I love this!
As a 45-year-old, I’ve seen LOADS of trends come and go and come back again. And I will NEVER stop wearing skinny jeans, or part my hair on the side!

    1. It’s just wild to me they think they invented ANY trend- all we really do is recycle and revive old trends. Sure, you can give ’em a modern spin, but c’mon– fashion is so cyclical!

  8. Ooh, such velvety goodness, Ashley! If I didn’t have a cat (aka Hair Machine) I would def have more velvet!

Re: “the young people” and their dopey side/middle part nonsense…HELLO, I LIVED through the 70s and the middle parts and it was not pretty and does NOT look any more modern now. Ugh.

You’re on TikTok? What’s your name there? I’m @bettyerainwater – I LIVE for TikTok. TikTok is my love language. TikTok is my BOYFRIEND. When I grow up I;m gonna MARRY TikTok. You think I’m kidding. I’m not.

    1. Lol, I hear you! I just love how Gen Z thinks they invented mom jeans and the middle part- like, children, no.

I am on TikTok but only as a lurker- I’ve never posted. I’m @ashrockchalk there- I’ll look you up!

    1. The cold is CRAZY! Today it’s supposed to start “warming” up into the 20s, lol. And I’m actually excited about it. Stay warm!

  9. When I was younger, my mom always told me that clothes are cyclical. I didn’t understand. Lol Then, of course, these days I can totally agree. Fashion is cyclical but style is forever and that’s what makes styling clothes so much fun. We make it our own and to me, that will never go out style. I love your velvet blazer! It’s so rich and looks so soft to the touch. Keep rocking that blazer lady! You look amazing.

  10. I’m team skinny and I don’t mind that is not trendy anymore! I’m not fashion victim I wear what I love!!
And you look beautiful in that look but laugh about all that issue!

  11. That velvet blazer looks so good on you and I like the texture mix of it with the denim! 🙂

I’ll always love skinny jeans – never giving them up even if they make me look old, haha! Nothing wrong with looking old!

Hope that you are having a good weekend!

  12. I LOVE this look, Ashley! It is simple and elegant and edgy. Velvet is totally my jam, too. And I just got a pair of wide legged denim like these and I forgot I had them! I think I need some snow to melt before I can wear them though. I really love the message of this post, too. No fashion shaming welcome in my world either! Wear what makes you happy and it will be in style simply because you are smiling!
