Extra LSR: Boulevardia 2018.

KC’s Boulevardia festival centers on beer + music.

Festival time! One of my favorite events of the summer was just a few weeks ago: Boulevardia. It’s is a 2-day outdoor bash with food, beer via Boulevard Brewery, and tons of music. There’s a Ferris wheel overlooking the stage, a ton of local vendors to shop, yard games, all wrapped up in a summertime happy vibe. Even though it always seems to be super hot (including this year!), it’s a total blast. Friday night is our jam– we like to round up our pals and hit the Stockyards District for the festival opening.

Boulevardia has grown so much since its first few years– more vendors (shopping!), more food (all the genres + food trucks), and more bands. This year Boulevard Brewery debuted its summer brew, Bou Lou, in honor of + collaboration with Tech N9ne, a local rapper who has been on the scene since I was in high school. (Seriously, have you heard Planet Rock? A tune!) Tech was headlining the Friday night shows, so even more reason to buy those tickets.

We started off by walking through all the vendor shops down the main stretch before making our way to the Hopcat VIP area just off the main stage. Outdoor couches, yard games, and Hopcat burgers– yum! I snagged a Bou Lou, obviously.

Yes, my shirt says: I’m a Happy Fucking Ray of Sunshine. It’s funny and accurate. It’s also on sale for $18, go get yourself one. These Agolde shorts are pricey, but they are so damn good. They’re high-waisted (making them prime candidates for pairing with crop tops/bodysuits), have the perfect amount of distressing, and strike the right balance between cutoffs and covering the bum. I wear them all the time, which completely justifies the price for me.

My best pals: Lauren + Brina.

The girls and I took off to ride the Rock Star, which proved to be a pretty terrifying (and yes, pretty fun) experience.

Death trap or super fun carnival ride? Both.

I had forgotten how terrifying that roller coaster drop feeling is– especially when you’ve got a little beer buzz going. I’m glad we rode, but I’m also glad the ride ended when it did, lest we have some nausea issues, haha.

We regrouped with our fellas to ride the Ferris wheel, aka the Iconic Festival Ride. Dave promised not to rock our seat (and thus give me a heart attack), which was much appreciated.

Festival-gazing from the Ferris wheel.

The girls and I embarked on a little shopping (scored some super cute earrings from The Jeweled Gypsy truck) while the boys held down the VIP fort, then we headed back to our seats for burgers, crack fries, more beer, and Jenga. It was blazing hot outside (heat indexes in the triple digits), but the Boulevardia team had water galore (especially in our Hopcat area), so we were able to hydrate safely and enjoy the brews.

My friend and I getting into a pretty intense (playful) discussion about the best BBQ in KC (Jack Stack!).

Tech N9ne came on stage at about 10:00, and Boulevardia went wild. It was so much fun to dance (and continue our Jenga game, of course) while he performed.

Our night ended with our group attempting to escape the crowds by going out the back of the festival (ie, jumping a damn fence) and attempting to get an Uber to pick us up. Unfortunately, almost all the surrounding roads were closed, which meant we ended up hiking for 30 minutes to the point where our Uber could snag us. It was still hot– probably 90°– and my feet were killing after traipsing all over the festival + dancing to the music all night long. We joked that all the walking meant burning off those beer and burger calories, but it was such a relief when we finally climbed in the air-conditioned Uber. 😉

Boulevardia 2018 was such a success! We will definitely be back again next year!

  1. OMG, that sounds so fun! I love nights that have en element of, “if I hadn’t been drinking (or if I were by myself), this would be miserable,” BUT, somehow when your friends are there, a 30 minute hike in crazy hot weather just becomes a fun memory:)

  4. This is such a fabulous festival, my husband and I had a blast on Saturday! I very nearly wore that exact color of yellow on Saturday in the form of a bodysuit with text on it. The color of the festival!
