Elevating Your Fall Outfit with a Statement Jacket.

A basic fall ‘fit, completely overhauled with a statement jacket switch.

Ahh, the statement jacket. It’s been a go-to outfitting trick of mine for years, but the fall trend report is giving the statement jacket some love. Your goal: pick a jacket that pops and wear it with everything. What pops, you say? Think prints, texture, strong shoulders, and bright colors. Anything goes right now with outerwear!

I love the way a statement jacket can totally change a look— allow me to demonstrate. Let’s take the classic outfit: white t-shirt, medium-wash skinny jeans, and black ankle boots. I then swapped out two different jackets (with two completely different feels) to show just how a quick outerwear switch can completely alter an outfit’s vibe.

Outfit on the left: Zara jacket (sold out; similar here, here, and here) // Outfit on the right: BlankNYC jacket (this season’s version here; also love this one if olive green is your jam) // Madewell jeans (similar from the same brand here) // Target t-shirt (only $8!) // Steve Madden boots (also love these if you want more of a heel) // Le Specs sunglasses c/o Shopbop (similar from the same brand here)

The first look makes a statement with sequins and fringe. Who says you can’t wear sequins during the day? The boxy cut of this jacket keeps it from feeling too Branson-gone-wild, but there is definitely a nod to the icon Dolly Pardon with this piece. It makes jeans and a tee shine!

The second look makes a statement with color. Who says all your leather jackets have to be black or brown? This gorgeous hunter green is bold without being too over the top; anyone can pull this jacket off! A motorcycle jacket is a timeless piece, but trotting it out a bright color is such a 2019 move.

So how else can you remix a fun piece of outerwear? Try throwing on a statement jacket over any of these outfits:

  • A neutral sweater dress with opaque tights and rugged ankle boots
  • Anything leopard print– you’re a trend-mixing pro!
  • With distressed jeans and sneakers

Once you’ve broken the ice, wearing loud(er) outerwear is so easy to pull off because it’s so customizable to your individual style. Not comfortable with prints, but love brights? Try a jewel-tone jacket. Really want something loud, but don’t want the jacket to overwhelm you? Forgo duster-length anything and look for shorter/cropped jackets.

Let your taste dictate the jacket choice, and let the statement-making begin.
