90s Girl Band Style for KCFW + A Shopbop Sale.

Wearing all the 90s things while keeping it fresh.

Confession time: I had a completely different outfit planned for KCFW. (The short of it: vinyl skirt, sequined sweater.) But on the day of, I put it on and just wasn’t feeling it. (This happens to the best of us!) Time to style pivot and come up with something else on the fly! Thankfully, I had some new pieces in the closet that had arrived from a few recent hauls. I was already in a 90s style frame of mind and wanted to keep with that theme; 90s vibes are the best vibes right now.

I started with this gingham skirt and floaty floral top ($18 and $30, respectively– talk about a score). A tight gingham mini screamed She’s All That in the spring, am I right? And this white blouse with black + yellow flowers felt a little 90s Drew Barrymore to me, which was perfect. Matched together, they made for a killer throwback print mix with a nice balance between revealing (short, tight skirt) and more modest (blousy top). A pair of ankle booties with attitude rooted the look in 2018: these Vince Camuto’s were a Christmas gift from my boyfriend and turn some serious heads every time I wear ’em. That classic leather jacket I’ve been wearing nonstop lately (see it here and here) added warmth and toughness, and a wide-brim hat gave this whole look a fashion Coachella vibe. (Said tongue-in-cheekily, of course, but I honestly dig that aesthetic.) And voilá! I looked like I should be playing drums for a cool 90s girl band.

Even though this wasn’t the outfit I originally planned on, I really love the way this look turned out. I love the mixed prints, coupled with the busy studded booties. I dig the way the hat adds a retro festival vibe (and it reminds me to dip into my hat collection more often!) and how the moto adds that edge I require from an outfit.

  1. Your fashion choices always impress me and it’s great to hear the thinking in your head as you consider them. These booties are fabulous. It appears you’re wearing them unzipped: is that a style-choice or for some practical reason?

    1. Thank you so much, friend! And yes, wearing these guys unzipped- I like it because it makes the boot opening a bit wider, which is more flattering on the leg. I have athletic legs, so anything to avoid those cankles, haha!

  2. Oh Drew Barrymore. You should watch her show Santa Clarita Diet on Netflix if you’re not already. Also, I can totally see the ’90s vibes with that cute skirt, but this look really works in the now as well.

  3. Love this look! That skirt is too cute, and the print mixing is fantastic. Also, I really want to watch She’s All That now. I still love that movie. Actually, I now want to watch all of the movies that I loved from late 1990s – early 2000s. They were kind of the best…

  5. Your floral shirt is beautiful, it looks great with the leather jacket and I like your statement boots too! 🙂 glad you could come up with another outfit at the last minute.

Hope you are having a great week so far! I’m feeling a bit under the weather unfortunately, trying to rest up (as much as you can with two kids, ha!).
