Sweater Vest + 90s Denim.

The sweater vest rises again.

2021 has arrived and so has the revival of the sweater vest. No longer reserved for Clueless Halloween costumes, the modern versions are slightly oversized and look best when paired with a slouchy button-up shirt. The resulting combo is preppy but not stuffy. I picked up this sweater vest from Nasty Gal (similar versions here and here) and layered a simple shirt underneath.

How to complete this ensemble? A pair of 90s-style straight leg jeans. These Levi’s have a high waist, a relaxed leg, and are free of distressing or whiskering. Just a classic denim wash. I gave them a cuff and slipped on a pair of nude booties. Et voilà! A cool, casual outfit that’ll stretch into early spring.

Want something more forgiving than denim? Take this vest and shirt combo and swap the jeans for a pair of leggings. Just as chic, a little comfier. I also really like the dress versions that can be worn with leggings and boots now, or a simple ankle boot and bare legs later.

Have you taken the sweater vest for a test drive just yet?

  1. Oh my gosh, such a great look. Casual, easy going and so pulled together. Win, win, win! I am really like your jeans. As someone who can wear jeans to work on Fridays I am always looking for something that doesn’t have frying or distressing, because although we can wear jeans, we still need to look professional. This would be the perfect outfit! Pinning for later.

    1. I like ’em a bit oversized because I think that makes it easier to wear. You could even do with a pair of leggings to really juxtapose that volume with something more fitted. 🙂

  2. I’ll be honest — I’ve been avoiding you. Not you personally but just this post. And the reason for that is my own foolishness.

Like many, I pre-judge things. Anticipating what something will be rather than exploring its reality is a bad habit. I’m trying to break it because, over and over again, it keeps me away from joy.

When I was a child, sweater vests were popular. Very popular. Among boys and girls. My family bought me them year after year. I had some nice ones, in varying colors, but never really liked them. So when I first saw your tweet about this post, my mind went “Ugh!” Of course, that had nothing to do with your actual post, just my preconception of what it might be.

I was wrong. I’ve always been wrong about you. Every time I’ve pre-judged your posts, I learned my error — you create interesting, fun, attractive ensembles with pieces that I could never deploy. So the lesson I should have learned by now is that you’re a magician. You create magic out of thin air. Honestly I believe it’s because you possess the rare and valuable instinct for stylish fashion. You have a Midas touch for clothing.

You rock this outfit. The sweater vest is pretty and I like how the V-neckline is deeper than any I’ve ever worn. You balance the vest beautifully, in shapes and colors. Looking at this outfit, I slap myself on the forehead and think, “Why’d you avoid this post up to now? Didn’t you learn that Ashley is a fashion magician?” Oh well, now I know. 🙂

    1. This comment is so sweet and honest! I totally admit- I can be the same way at first when a trend resurfaces! We just can’t help our preconceived notions or our past experiences with a trend, so they definitely color our initial judgment when they come back around. I try to let a trend marinate a little while when I’m not in love with it to see if my feelings eventually change. And you know I like to try quirky/off-beat trends and see if I can make them work! 🙂
