Striped Boho Chic Dress + Wedges.

All about breezy pieces in the dog days of summer, like this boho chic dress.

Ah yes, late July in Kansas City. Everything is too high: temperatures, humidity, and my number of heat-related complaints. Yes, I love summer. I pine for it November through March– but the intense heat and humidity really take the wind of out one’s sails, you know? Thankfully, dresses like this exist. A boho chic dress with fun multi-directional stripes and a super bias cut means you stay cool and on trend.

I’m a bit on the short side, and we’ve talked about how midi dresses can be a challenge for me. The rounded empire waist meant belting wasn’t an option, so I relied on a pair of trusty wedges for a little lengthening. (These are on sale and come in 3 other colors, btw.) The nature of this boho chic number is way less structured than the lace midi dress from last week; I embraced that rather than fighting against it.

Yes, it means that from some angles and/or with the right wind gust, I looked a little pregnant. (Fyi, this dress would be perfect for any of you mamas-to-be!) Not apologizing– number one: it’s still cute, and number two: bodycon-anything sounds like a death sentence when it’s this hot + muggy outside. Let your body breathe!

A styling trick for giving this dress some shape: slip on a fitted (and maybe slightly cropped) denim jacket. That will reign in all that floaty fabric at the waist. A denim jacket would make this more wearable at the office or in chilly environments, like AC-blasted restaurants and movie theaters.

You might have noticed I’ve switched out my everyday Garmin; I had been wearing the vivomove HR (with this rose gold magnetic band), but have recently been wearing the vivoactive 3. I do love my vivomove, but the vivoactive 3 has GPS and specific settings for cycling (which comes in so handy when I pop down for a spin class right after leaving the office). I highly recommend it!

  1. This dress, print and shape is perfect. I am also on the shorter -normalosh end of the spectrum but your suggestions are perfect. I love how the stripes are varied and you’ve gotten away from the typical black and white.

    1. I thought the color scheme in this print was really fun, right? And yes- wedges definitely help add some length!

  2. I really need to get myself of pair of wedge, cork sandals or espadrilles! I find it slightly ironic that I don’t have a pair because I’m always thinking how good they look on others. I think they would also be perfect because they look super chic, they’re comfortable, lightweight, and enable you to wear them for hours on end which is what you want when you have a long day out. And they’re also perfect for any day-to-night outfit!

  3. I am also on the short side so midi dress struggles are something I totally relate to. I love that you gave yourself some height with the wedges! That dress is so fabulous on you!

  4. Love love love that dress! And I am so with you on the loose fitting things – I just can’t do anything remotely tight when it is 150 degrees!

  5. I just love the vertical and horizontal (and chevron!) lines in this dress, so visually appealing. I need some wedges like those, they look so comfy and would go with so many pieces in my closet!

    1. Most of me was like, “Eh, who cares if some random person thinks I look pregnant” hahahaha. 🙂 Empire waists are fun!

    1. Yes! The black really pulled out a few of the darker stripes in the dress- and please, give me all the height, always! Haha!

  6. I’m with you not wanting ANYTHING bodycon right now–too hot!! Although yay for this little cool down we got today, right? I love that dress, the curved waistline is fun and I like the colors and pattern!

  7. It’s always nice to find something that you like that you find chic and comfortable. Especially in this heat which I have to admit the humidity and heat is almost unbearable. And like you said it’s interesting how when it’s too hot you wish for to be cooler and vice versa. I can’t wait though until fall right now. Although winter time is another story.

  8. Hi, Ashley.
I also have this problem with these kind of dresses, I feel the same looks like I am pregnant.
I like stripes and it’s a beautiful summer dress.
    have a nice weekend !!
