I have been dabbling in satin pieces for some time now– and I have to say, I’m digging the vibe. As I’ve said before: to keep satin manageable and modern, make sure the fit is oversized. Think more TLC’s Creep video and less Katy Perry in the mid-aughts. (Shopping the men’s section is a good place to start.) This satin button-up shirt is a good example of that: it’s slouchy enough to make for a nice French tuck situation and also to keep from making too many wrinkles.

Speaking of French, the shirt is a deeper version of a French blue. Not quite jewel tone, but certainly not muted. I also love the little starburst print throughout– it was cute and it helped disguise the wrinkling.

Now, with satin you have to accept some degree of wrinkling; you steam the piece before you put it on, and then you go about and live your life knowing that the satin will wrinkle. (Note: it’s always worse on camera than in real life.) I did just that with this button-up and a pair of cuffed boyfriend jeans. (Super old, but here’s the current version and here’s a more affordable version.)

Slingback blue snakeskin pumps with an illusion feature were a fun way to dress this look up. Satin feels inherently dressy; I wanted to juxtapose that with the rougher denim without losing the overall elevation of the outfit. (Kept those cuffs loose, though.) Gold chains and pretty statement earrings with a bright lip helped, too.

The end result is both chic and casual, dressed up and lived-in. You have some statement pieces happening in the form of loud shoes, flashy gold accessories, and a bold satin shirt, but the outfit is built on the foundation of basic boyfriend jeans. A really good outfit for a time when the weather is warming up and you want to hit a (safe!) patio with your (hopefully vaccinated!) friends.

  1. Wonderful! As you say, satin is inherently dressy so presenting it casually works well. And your trick about wearing over-sized works equally as well; I wouldn’t have guessed that. You know so much more about fashion than the rest of us!

    1. Yes! I don’t think super tight satin is very flattering- it creates lumps where there are no lumps! Oversized makes it so wearable!

    1. Haha, I am definitely going to have to re-learn how to be in pumps for longer periods of time and not just for shoots!

    1. It does wrinkle easy- definitely didn’t seem as wrinkled live as it did on camera; totally how it always goes, right? Haha. But you’re right- it’s all worth it!

  2. You look beautiful in that blue. It’s such a great colour on you. And the sandals are fabulous with the rest of the outfit. The perfect date night look, for sure!

  4. Hi
Well blue is not my favorite color, but satin is a kind of fabric that I love, and thanks for the tip: it has to be oversized to be modern! You look great!
