Red Kimono + Biker Shorts.

Biker shorts, styled in a very wearable way.

I’m sure you’ve seen the return of biker shorts. Everyone from Kim KW to the teens at your local Target are wearing them. The 90s kid in me is so happy, but the adult in me had no idea if I could pull them off in 2019. You know I’ll try anything fashion-wise at least once, so I snagged a super cheap pair from H&M (and bonus: they ended up being awesome!) and started styling.

I went with an all-black base: the shorts, my favorite crop top (such a good Forever21 find), and a pair of studded black cage sandals. Then I added a floaty, duster-length red kimono for some coverage. While biker shorts are longer than my usual denim cutoffs, I felt way more exposed in these. Probably because while they resemble a legging, they don’t quite have the same compression as a pair of leggings, so you might feel a little naked at first. Answer: throw something on top.

This bright kimono was the perfect piece to test drive the biker shorts: it provided an attention-grabbing pop of color and gave some serious coverage to the look. The result? I got to test drive the biker shorts without going full-tilt.

I recommend this styling trick so often. Throwing a kimono/jacket/blazer on over something is perfect when:

  • the office/restaurant/movie theater’s AC is blasting and you’re freezing despite it being midsummer
  • your office has a more conservative dress code
  • you want to add some coverage to a slinky dress, strappy camisole, or, in this case, a pair of biker shorts

Now I need to sort out how to style these biker shorts without the kimono. I’m thinking the tomboy way: oversized t-shirt/sweatshirt (if it’s cool) and sneakers. Thoughts? Have you guys tried biker shorts yet?

  1. When there’s a new fashion trend that confuses me, I come here. And wisely so — you always find ways to style the trend well. I never would have imagined a colorful kimono and it works so well. You’re a fashion genius!

    1. Aw, you’re so sweet! And trying trends is fun, but it can definitely be a bit daunting and seeing someone else interpret it is a great way to get ideas for styling the trend for yourself! 🙂

  2. Oh I love a good kimono. I’m still not sure about biker shorts for myself, but I like the way you styled them here, with the all black and the kimono. If I were to get one it would definitely be in black.

    1. I definitely opted for more coverage with these shorts, haha- we’ll see if I can style ’em a different way in the future.

  3. You rock this look Ashley!! This kimono would be a perfect cover up for a workout outfit!! You can tell where my mind is…haha.

    1. They are SO 90s on their own, for sure- which I don’t mind, usually, but for my first try I wanted a bit more coverage. 😉

    1. They definitely don’t leave much to the imagination, haha! The kimono added some coverage, which I was grateful for in this trial run 😉

  4. A kimono is the perfect layer over top to give a little extra coverage! You are rocking those biker shorts! I love your sandals too!

  5. What a fun kimono! It looks great with the monochrome black outfit. I love kimonos as a pop of colour in summer like this 🙂

Hope that your week is a good one! It’s a cold one here, winter has definitely arrived, brr!

  6. I love bike shorts, I can’t believe I am even typing this because it’s only a recent admiration really. I’ve come around. But damn, they look terrible on me hahaha. That said, I do love, love, love your styling with the kimono. It’s giving me ideas!

  7. Girl, I said I would never wear biker shorts and now I have to double think my thoughts. I also was excited for this trend and I figured I’ll live through my kids wearing them, because I felt “too old”. You have turned that thought around. The kimono definitely made the outfit! Cant wait to see how you style them with an oversize sweatshirt… Yass girl!
