Before we get into this pink floral dress situation… No matter what your personal stance is on abortion, the fact is– you should have the right to decide for yourself. The Supreme Court ruling last week stripped women, trans women, and non-binary people of their right to choose. Morality debates aside, there’s the undeniable fact that abortion is part of healthcare and is necessary for certain medical emergencies. This includes evacuating a miscarriage that the body cannot expel on its own (yep, that happens) and ectopic pregnancies (which are never viable pregnancies and can be lethal if left untreated).

By overturning Roe vs. Wade, the Supreme Court robbed people of that Constitutional right. We’re less safe now– in a country where safety continues to be an ongoing concern. This will have lasting impacts we’re only beginning to understand. I’m still processing this; by no means do I have all the answers here. You’re welcome to your opinion, whatever it may be, but I’m not interested in engaging in a debate in my comments. I just didn’t feel right starting off a blog post debuting a cute outfit without getting this all out there in the open and off my chest first.

Moving on…

Now that we’re firmly in summer– almost 4th of July, even– short little summer dresses are right up my alley. I found this pink floral dress at H&M (for under $20) and thought it would be perfect with a pair of sneakers for a cute-but-casual summer outfit.

Sneakers and a dress has been my go-to look lately, but it’s just too good (and too easy!) to resist. While I love a summer sandal or even a platform heel, there is just something about a tennis shoe that immediately adds an element of cool to any ensemble.

Back to this pink floral dress: I sized up so it wasn’t too bodycon, which is never my vibe in the KC humidity. I was immediately drawn to that off-the-shoulder feature for its double-ruffle flirtiness. And hello, that $20 price tag? C’mon. H&M has a few riffs on this dress at the same price point in this same cute pink floral here and here.

Happy early 4th of July! We all deserve a long weekend to relax and enjoy a few cocktails, so I hope you get to do that with your friends and family.

  3. Ashley, I think you are so right in regards to your stance on prochoice. While my journey with infertility and miscarriage makes me highly value life for myself, I would NEVER want to take away the choice of anyone else! That is not for me to say! It was a very sad day in this country and makes me worried for our future. What other rights will they take away?? It’s scary for myself and my 2 daughters.

    1. Thank you, Laura! And this is so true; you highlight the very personal nature of making that decision. For some women, they could never choose abortion. That is MORE THAN OKAY AND THEIR ABSOLUTE RIGHT. I support that 1000%. It’s the taking the choice away for others that I take issue with- the decision is so nuanced and painful for any woman who makes it, but she needs to be able to make it based on her own beliefs, counsel from her doctor, and ability/desire to raise a child.

      I am very concerned about the future. I am sending you and your little girls a big fat virtual hug because man, this sucks right now.

  5. Ashley, I agree with you 100%. Roe v Wade made women a little safer…its repeal scares me so very much. I will stop there, or I will end up writing and writing and writing.

    You are absolutely radiant in this dress! I love the look of dresses with sneakers, but I have yet to pull it off successfully (in my eyes anyway).

  9. It’s scary how our country continues to move back decades rather than forward. I’m concerned about the future for all women.

    1. It really, really is. And that we keep fighting and re-fighting these battles that have already been decided and it not only does it rescind rights and take us back in time, it also keeps us from addressing problems we have now, like infrastructure, the economy, education, etc.

  13. This is exactly why we shouldn’t only look at “our” size for such cute items. Sometimes a different size can be the right one. That’s how it is here in AZ sometimes too!!

  18. I know I am still absorbing this myself. It is not just that choice is being taken away, even women who are not of child bearing years; ALL women are being told you are subservient, less then, a vessel, and on the level of a child. And indeed they are will over turning other rules and taking away more rights. I have been thinking more and more of leaving this country if I can pull it off.

    1. All great points- I have definitely been feeling that, also. And the knowledge that this will disproportionately affect black and brown communities and at-risk groups is just the icing on the crappiest cake ever. I totally understand the feeling of wanting to leave the country!

  30. I am incredibly sadden by the overturning. I’ve seen so many people in high positions post publicly of needing a safe abortion. I’m not sure what to do next besides donating to plan parenthood and other similar organizations. Big change is needed!
