Muppet Sweater + Pumps for Better Kansas City.

A loud + fun Muppet sweater for a TV segment on winter fashion.

The team at Better Kansas City invites me on the show now and again to do a fashion segment. To kick off 2019, the crew wanted me to do a segment on staying cozy but on trend this winter. Challenge accepted! Statement sweaters were on the agenda, so I popped on this fun red mixed media sweater– which I dubbed a Muppet sweater on air– with a classic pair of darker-wash denim and burgundy pumps (on mega sale!) for the show. Watch the segment right here.

A morning on Better Kansas City means I get up and do a full face of makeup (high-def makeup fit for HDTV; I like MAC Studio Fix Fluid), pack the pieces I’m showing on-air (I always pull from my own closet to showcase examples of trends), and then hit the road early in order to get to the studio about 30 minutes before the show starts.

My bestie + photog Brina comes along for the ride; she’s instrumental in helping me set up (dress mannequins, take pre-show snaps, etc.) and stay calm. Live TV is nerve-wracking, even if I’ve done it now for several years. I get mic’d up and review my segment topics with the on-set producer before sitting off-camera until it’s time to take my place on the stage, usually during a commercial break. Then it’s go time!

My knees always get a little weak right when the host starts introducing the segment; I take a few deep breaths and fix my posture, being sure to smile when they cut to me. Annnnd, we’re off. I’ve memorized my talking points, but things always end up being a little different live than how I’ve practiced. The host asks a different question, a cue doesn’t come through the way we had initially anticipated, a graphic doesn’t display at the right time– it’s live television, so you have to be comfortable pivoting.

Before I know it, the host is thanking me and they’re cutting away. Those three to four minutes fly by! Brina has been snapping + storying during the segment, and we work quickly to tear down our portion of the set and quietly wave goodbye to the crew as we exit stage right. Done and dusted!

Again, you can watch my latest segment here. Sherpa + teddy bear, statement sweaters, and faux fur jackets– I cover all the coziest pieces to add to your closet to stay chic and warm until spring arrives.

  1. I could not be more proud of you! You looked incredible, you sounded incredible and your tips were spot on! I just loved the discussion about your Muppet sweater and it looked so camera good! And can I say I love the little braid you put in your hair and the soft waves. You nailed it beautiful girlfriend! I’ll bet they’re going to have you back more and more!

    1. It was definitely something I was so terrified of at first- but now that I’ve done it so many times over the past several years, it’s not nearly as stressful. Although I do still totally get nervous right before!

  2. That’s so awesome to be on live TV but I can see why it can be nerve wracking. I am getting the jitters just thinking about it. I love the colors of your sweater but most of I love the fringes on the sleeves. How fun are they?! They are not only TV worthy but definitely winter worthy.

    1. Thank you, Allie! Yes, pretty stressful leading up to airtime, although I practice my talking points over and over in the week leading up- that helps! 🙂

  3. How brilliant! I bet it was a lot of fun although also stressful. I am not keen on television, plus I always think my voice sounds odd, haha. You look great! <3 /Madison

  7. Love the playful sweater. And kudos to you for being brave and smart appearing on live TV. Those segments sound like my court appearances where, no matter how much you prepare, unexpected things happen and you have to react instantly with flexibility and poise. Impressive!!
