Cropped Plaid Sweater + Madewell Denim for Iliza.

A sassy little cropped plaid sweater and some Buffy hair.

A few weeks ago, my best pal, Brina, and I hit up the Iliza show when her tour came through Kansas City. Have you seen Iliza’s latest Netflix standup? Um, hilarious. Since the theme was Elder Millennial and I most definitely fall into that category, I wanted to play up my 90s roots. This cropped plaid sweater from Kindred Shops was a cute, Clueless-esque option, which I promptly paired with high-waisted skinnies and a statement belt. Kitten-heel booties with a definitive NYC feel added a little edge. (I’ve been wearing so much Kindred lately!)

Elder Millennials like myself might be familiar with an oversized hair clip we called “dog claws” back in the 90s and early 2000s. I still hoard these clips because they are perfect for throwing my hair up without the fear of that dreaded kink an elastic band gives you. (Yes, I’m aware/a fan of those telephone cord-type ponytail holders, but I can’t give up my ol’ dog claws.) My hair looked particularly cute worn up like this when I was doing my makeup (very reminiscent of my teenage hero, Buffy the Vampire Slayer), so I left the clip in for the night. Why not really lean into those 90s vibes?

Started off with a reddish brown smokey eye and some seriously 90s hair.

Do you catch Muffin in the background? That pup follows me all over the house; she lounges on that chair in my beauty room while I do my makeup.

Once we parked and got into the venue, Priority Number 1 became getting a drink at the bar before the show started. The Midland is a gorgeous theater with lots of 1920s charm, but one of my favorite parts is the bar at the tippy-top of the venue. The lines are usually shorter and the view is pretty dope.

We ended up having such a good time; Iliza was on point and we got to hear some new material that’ll end up being part of her next Netflix special. (Yes, homegirl has secured a fifth and we’re so proud of her!) She also went to KU and has the cutest little pup who runs across the stage to open and close the show, so obviously we are meant to be lifelong friends.

I would totally remix this cropped plaid sweater for the office with a pencil skirt and pumps since a pencil skirt is a high-waisted option. (No bare midriffs at the office, please.) It would look great layered over a camisole, too, if you needed to dial back the skin factor.

Coming back at you Thursday with another 90s look (totally my uniform at this point, right?) and some vintage goods!

  1. You are the sweetest sensational sassy girl I know!!! LOVE this sweater and what a fun night. The theater is gorgeous and you were the prettiest girl there! xo

  2. I LOVE THOSE HAIR CLAWS SO MUCH. J.Crew, Loft and Banana still seLl nice sturdy plastic ones and I buy them every now and then. Also, love the 80s and 90s vibes in this. Fun cropped plaid sweater. Love those button-front jeans.

    1. Aren’t they the best?! I’ve been wearing them around the house for years, but I think I’ll be breakin’ ’em out in public more often!

    1. Haha- normally it does not look THIS good! I just threw it up to do my makeup and was like, “Ohhhkayyyy, this is a vibe” and rolled with it! 😉

    1. Haha, THANK YOU! And the telephone cord hair ties sometimes work on me, and sometimes they tangle in my hair (especially when it’s wavy/textured)!
