Something you need in your wardrobe: a few variations of the classic button down shirt. (Or maybe you call it a button up, an oxford shirt, etc.) A fitted version, a slouchy boyfriend version, and something in between. Be it crisp white or baby blue, a shirt like this is an easy way to add a little classic American style to a pair of skinny jeans and flats.

Kansas City was blessed with a warm front last week; think 70° days and actual sunshine. A definite spring tease before the snow returned over the weekend, but I’ll take what I can get in terms of nice weather in late January. Warm weather meant venturing out jacket-less in a button down and ankle-length jeans. To finish the outfit: a pair of tortoiseshell flats (seriously love these; bring ’em baaaaaack, JCrew!), high ponytail, and a leather crossbody.

Shop the look:

A good high + low mix in your closet is smart. You can stock up on basics at stores like Target and Gap (which are improving on design + quality all the time), and pick up a few luxe pieces here and there, like this gorgeous almost-marsala-colored leather Saint Laurent bag. (Or not– if designers aren’t your thing, that’s cool too. You don’t have to spend big bucks to be stylish.)

  26. Did you say 70Deg!!! Damn girl..we are struggling here at 7 to 17 deg! Gah.. someday soon…
    And a button down(up?) shirt is such a necessity for any closet..I feel its a must have actually! Love this casual outfit, and the crossbody adds so much glamor to it..

  47. This is my go to staple outfit! Whether it’s a white or light blue button down (because I have a few of both) I live in this! Love your bag and shoes too, adorable as always ! So jealous of your 70 degree weather, it is freezing here and today is the first day we saw the sun in over a week!
