Calendar-wise, fall is just around the corner. And don’t get me wrong– I’m ready! As much as I love summer, I’m ready for cooler weather and a new season of style. But autumn in KC won’t really settle in until the beginning of October, so we have about a month or so where everyone is PSL-everything, but the temps are still poolside vibes. How’s a girl to dress? Well, we start with a 90s-style midi skirt for the September issue of KC Homes & Style.

This skirt is the perfect start to a summer-to-fall outfit. Summer-weight fabric with a sassy slit, but in rich chocolate with a neutral 90s ditsy floral print that feels more like autumn. I tucked a cream ribbed knit sweater into the skirt as my top of choice. (Sure, it’s a sweater, but short sleeves minimize the chance of overheating.)

A square-toed heeled thong sandal helped me stay in the 90s style lane. This type of shoe has been everywhere this summer! I’m leaning into that here while the weather is still warm enough to pull it off. A dainty pearl necklace and a vintage gold bangle rounded out the accessories. Pearls have been having a moment recently and I love this take on the preppy classic.

This outfit feels very back-to-school, am I right? First day stylings and all that. Take the basics and this 90s-style midi skirt, however, and you can stretch this look well past Homecoming. When it cools off, I’ll throw on a leather jacket or a cozy cardigan over the top. A preppy white sneaker or a chunky loafer replace the sandals come October, when bare toes feel out of season. You could even add a pair of tall boots to the mix and really warm things up, but I’d wait until the first frost.

Congrats to the KC Homes & Style team on another beautiful issue! You can read it in full right here.

A Shear Texture Chop.

You might notice my hair’s a little shorter here, and that’s because we decided to do some chopping during my last visit with Steph at Shear Texture. I felt like my hair was in a stagnant growth phase, and the ends felt a little thin and weren’t holding a curl the way I like ’em to. Best way to beat this? Slice off about 4 inches!

I wanted something with a little bit of edge; years ago during my platinum era, Steph cut my hair into a sharp graduated lob. I loved it! This was before I started wearing my hair really curly, so I was interested to see how the big, voluminous waves would fare with this sort of a chop.

Fall 2023 Hair: Honey Butter Blonde with Copper Accents Cut into an Asymmetrical Lob

Where we landed: a honey butter blonde with some copper accents (I can’t quit; the warmth is so fun!) and multiple money pieces to account for my no-part vibe when I wear my hair wavy.

The multiple-money-piece approach is something Steph and I developed. I wanted to try the trend but didn’t usually wear my hair straight and/or with a center part (two features that make the money piece stand out). We wove several chunkier highlights into my hairline to account for the different ways I flip my hair when I wear it wavy.

Multiple money pieces and lots of both babylights and highlights to keep things nice and bright.

I have been really loving the result! I haven’t had medium-length hair in years, and it feels really light and fresh at this length. Plus, it looks thicker now that we’ve parted with those thinner ends. As much as I love my big, crazy lion hair, I think I might lean into this length for a while.

    1. Haha, I totally feel you, Marsha- when I turned up at work with straight hair, people said the same thing! Maybe I should adopt a doppelgänger personality for when I wear it straight, haha! Thanks so much for swinging by!

    1. That’s what I’m all about- gotta stay cool this time of year even though I want to lean right into fall. Thank you so much, Mireille!

  1. Lovely outfit, just lovely. And I admire the sophistication of how you always relate your clothes to the season.

Your medium-length hair is adorable. Great lengthy. You’d be surprised to learn my (natural) hair is about the same length right now. That, alas, is the only similarity in our appearances. 🙂

  2. I’ll start from the top – your tresses are absolutely beautiful! The outfit is youthful and sweet! Cute sandals! I wear sandals till it snows. 🙂
