Taking a Vintage Farm Coat for a Test Drive.

How does one wear a 90s farm coat?

Historically, I’m not too good at shopping for vintage pieces. I don’t have the patience to scour the shops, hunting and sifting for a stylish needle in a haystack. But the vintage section at Kindred is really, really good. They source all the stuff from all over the city and curate it for the store, which means everything is pre-scanned for optimal coolness. This Eddie Bauer farm coat circa 1995, for example. (Get a 2019 version here.) Very cool, obviously retro, and with major potential. But how to wear it?

The thing about vintage is you have to work with whatever size the piece comes in because it’s not like you can just swap it out for a better size. (The downside of one-of-a-kind!) This farm coat is a men’s medium– and somehow a men’s 90s medium is a 2019 men’s XXL, I swear– and swallowed me whole when I put it on. It needed shape, so I cuffed the sleeves and belted it over a graphic tee. Faded + high-waisted black denim (these Madewell’s are stretchy and amazing) and some pumps that complimented the belt, and I was ready.

This outfit is definitely a different vibe for me; the farm coat isn’t something I would normally grab and I don’t usually belt a coat that isn’t meant to be belted. But the Kindred girls convinced me I should work this piece, and I definitely love a styling challenge. What do you think? I think the end result is offbeat and cool, and it got me a little out of my fashion comfort zone. It’s weird– and you guys know how I like weird. 😉 Another way to style would be to go the Ariana Grande route: coat worn off-the-shoulder with thigh high boots and a mega pony.  Now that would make for an interesting date night ‘fit!

  1. This is exactly how I think…how can I make this work for me? And you’ve done a fabulous job, Ashley.
I think it’s nice to have a bigger coat every once in a while….especially when you need to layer, layer and layer more under it!!

  2. I think you did a great job styling this piece. Belting it was a good option to give it a shape. It’s a fun challenge because those pockets are massive and there is absolutely no darting or tailoring to it. I might either wearing it oversized with leggings and knee boots to go with the farm theme. Or take a pair of scissors to it and crop it. Thanks for sharing. Xo, Ellese

    1. Oooh- cropping it with scissors is a brilliant + brave idea! I need to experiment wearing it unbelted as a dress with thigh high boots- too fun!

  3. I think the Kindred girls were on to something! You look great in the coat, can’t believe its a mens XXL today though. Also don’t have the patience to search in charity shops either although I feel like I should to be more sustainable!

    1. I love the sustainability (and the one-of-a-kind factor) that vintage shopping brings- and agreed, it’s so nice the Kindred staff is there to curate + pull for their customers because I don’t really have the patience for vintage!

    1. Same- you definitely have to have some serious patience if you’re going to rifle through thrift shops. I love how Kindred sources everything so the selection is top-notch!
