Am I ready for a Nirvana video or what? 90s all the way today in a pair of mom jeans (think baggy, higher-waisted) and combat boots. My boots have a bit of a heel, which is nice for adding a little height. You can always go with the classic Dr. Martens, which have made a huge comeback.

Up top I’ve got on a black bralette and a spring-weight shacket. Yes, it’s plaid, which is normally relegated for fall, but it’s early April. Kansas City has not yet begun to spring, you know what I mean? While days are longer and things are starting to green up, we’ll still have super chilly days. Enter the shacket! A great trend for adding a lightweight layer that keeps you cozy.

I accessorized with lots of gold jewelry– seriously the staple around these parts. A pair of lightweight-but-statement hoops (that are super affordable) and an initial necklace. Several rings, including this stacked beauty from Uncommon James that I wear all the time.

I am into the super laid-back vibe of this outfit. Now that spring has sprung and vaccination rates are going up, we’re starting to eye patio season (safely, of course). This look is exactly the type of vibe I typically shoot for: a little attitude, comfortable, and on-trend.

This outfit also reminds me to keep my combat boots around for spring; usually, I’ve packed them up for the winter by now. But I’m seeing lots of combat boots-and-dresses looks for spring and sticking with a tougher boot with denim (like I’ve done here). This is a great alternative to a sneaker– still casual, still comfortable, but more edge.

  1. Life is slowly returning to normal. Not there yet but we’re moving, at least. One thing I like about your outfits, beyond their aesthetics, is how you can contextualize them in history. That knowledge appeals to me.

    1. I’m old enough to vividly remember the 90s- but it’s so cool to see trends from the 60s, 70s, and 80s come back in modern forms. Fashion is truly cyclical!

  2. I am 100% I have photos of me in the ninth grade wearing more or less this exact outfit (complete with my dad’s plaid jacket from the late 70s that he didn’t wear anymore but could never quite bear to part with) – I loved it then and I love it now!

    1. I usually pack my boots away- but definitely need to remember to try them in a few spring looks before it gets too warm!

    1. I really want to get a pair of Docs- takes me back to middle school! And I had totally forgotten about the breaking in process- soooo true!

  3. I planned on skipping the shacket trend, but I must say that I kind of want one after seeing your outfit haha! But sooo chic with the high-waisted jeans and the statement sunnies. Well, maybe I do need one after all…! Xx

  4. LOL I love the 90s reference—my era! The plaid jacket looks super comfy and warm and it looks fabulous with the mom jeans. And those boots? Well, they’re freaking gorgeous!

  5. I have been on the lookout for a cute shacket for spring! I love how you went all out 90s with this look! I was at the mall yesterday and noticed so many 90s and early 00s trends. It reminds me of my childhood!

  6. Ashley, this is the perfectly modernized version of the perfect 90’s grunge style! I absolutely dressed just like this in the 90’s except my shackets were just my dad’s old flannels! And my mom jeans…well, they were just jeans back then, the only style we had (unless I wore my dad’s discarded jeans which I did often). You look fabulous and comfortable, my friend.
