Orange Maxi Dress + Crop Top.

Summer layers done easy in a maxi dress and crop top.

Here’s where I’m at re: getting dressed (and not just putting on a clean pair of jammies). I’m looking for comfort, nothing too tight (max volume is really the name of the game), and some saturated summery colors to break up all those neutrals I’ve been loving. This orange maxi dress is checking all those boxes.

I love the tiered + asymmetrical hemline– it creates some pretty movement and really ups the breeze factor of the dress. Because it’s not full-stop summer just yet (KC is having a bit of a cooler May), I layered a basic white crop top under. 90s vibes, a little coverage, more warmth, all wins. I went with a flat sandal (scored this pair in a boutique in Greece a few years back, but these are a killer dupe).

All the volume in this orange maxi dress makes accessorizing unnecessary; I kept it all paired down and let that linen do its thing. This dress is mega comfy but doesn’t feel like it’s trying too hard. And this color! Such a summer jam. It’ll be so pretty with a (faux) tan, thrown over the top of a swimsuit.

How was your Memorial Day weekend? I’m really reeling how quickly May flew by. It’s the unofficial start of summer, guys! This is usually such an exciting time, but things are still very strange with COVID-19 being a now ever-present factor we all have to consider.

I’ve been working from home since mid-March and we’re not due back in the office until (at least) early July. Even though our state + county began opening up select businesses and services a few weeks ago, we’ve still been staying at home to wait and see our area responds to lifting the shelter-in-place order.

No big barbecues, no trips to the lake, no massive gatherings of friends and family– summer definitely looks different this year. I’ll just be over here in breezy dresses, drinking lots of rose on the deck, and Zooming my pals for happy hours.

  1. I’ve made it unofficial mission this summer to add a few maxi dresses that aren’t black to my closet and I really love this one! I’m also working from home until probably at least July at this point, and maybe longer. It’s honestly getting to the point for me where going back to a physical office will feel like such a huge break in my routine. It’s weird – I never thought I’d settle into this work from home as well as I seem to have.

    1. Yes! You need a few of these in your closet- right now, they work layered (or if you’re indoors in AC), but later they will be so cute worn on their own!

  2. I adore this dress on you! Love the color and breezy vibe! Things will start to open up here at the end of the week but I’m not ready to venture out too far yet either.

    1. We’re definitely not ready to venture out much, either- and I think it’ll be a long time before anything is “back to normal.” But we’re taking advantage of nice weather when we can and hitting up our deck + patio!

  3. This post illustrates something I’ve suspected for years — the success of an outfit comes from not just the clothes but the synergy the clothes have with the personality of the wearer. I look at this and think “neither I nor most of my friends could pull off this dress but, on her, it works.” And that’s because you have the right blend of confidence and beauty to make it sing. Lucky you!

    1. You are so sweet, my friend! I do think that much of pulling an outfit off has to do with YOU wearing the outfit, not the outfit wearing YOU. It’s something I consciously keep in mind- and even if I don’t always feel super confident, I try to throw my shoulders back and grin through it. πŸ˜‰

  4. This is a fun, summery look Ashely! I love the raw edges and linen(!). Our weather has been up and down, too. Gosh, I know, the beginning of summer?! What the what? Our community is breaking out of lockdown. It’s a slow-ish process, b/c people aren’t still quite sure how to handle themselves, I think.

    1. We are very much the same- some things like bars are still closed, but smaller businesses are opening up with restrictions on how many people can be there at a time, etc. Glad you like this look, Kimberly!

  5. Our closet must always have comfortable and less tight clothes to be able to use on very hot days. A kiss, dear Ashley.

    1. I’m super into maxi dresses like this- they are so easy to throw on, but way more stylish + fun than basic tanks and denim shorts.

  6. Oh yes indeed I love non body con lose fitting clothes for summer and maxi dresses are a no brainer and yes layering at this time of year is great. At the height of summer you will be wearing this dress on it’s own. And it is gorgeous as are you!

  8. I just know that “tiered + asymmetrical hemline” dress makes easy movement….
Yes, look like that you easy to walk with this pretty dress.

    Haver a great day

  9. This is a fabulous summer dress, Ashley, and pairing it with a crop top for a cooler day is a great idea. I love those sandals too – it’s always so nice to buy something when you’re travelling, to remind you of the vacation when you get back home, isn’t it?
