Happy 2024! I’m back just in time for the massive polar vortex slamming the middle portion of the country. (Thankfully, this was shot before the temps dropped below zero!) I’m sharing a winter-friendly way to wear those denim maxi skirts we saw so much of over the summer as part of the January/February edition of Kansas City Homes & Style.

I wanted some oversized layers, so this herringbone wool blazer sized up made for the perfect topper. The hefty wool fabric and a set of elbow patches help anchor this look as January-appropriate. My exact blazer is sold out, but you can score almost an exact one right here. I would size up if you’re looking for the same slouchy vibe I was going for here.

A classic white button-up served as the base of the outfit. This shirt is from the men’s section at Amazon; it’s a timeless piece that looks so classic when tucked into denim, like this denim maxi skirt. I belted the look with a dark brown leather belt to cinch in the waist; this helps balance the volume of the oversized blazer.

Last but certainly not least are these killer brown croc boots. The shorter kitten heel is right on trend and the tall boot shaft shields your legs from the cold. To further warm this up (or make it more vortex-friendly, if you will), you could layer on a pair of wool tights or fleece-lined leggings.

Many of this outfit’s elements are classic, but I’m wearing them here in a modern way. The denim maxi skirt? Make it modern: frayed hem, slit up the front. The wool blazer? Make it modern: size up and go for the borrowed-from-the-boys feel. The tall boots? Make it modern: opt for a lower heel and choose a chocolate brown color vs. the classic black.
