Dark, cozy neutrals for the holiday season, starting with a versatile satin skirt.

Thanksgiving week is here, what are you wearing? I think I’m mixing it up this year and going a little dressier than I usually do in this chocolate brown sweater and black satin skirt. (Psst, this look is featured in the holiday issue of Kansas City Homes & Style, which is on stands now!)

The satin skirt is a major part of any trendy fall wardrobe this season. From baby tees to blazers, you can find it paired with everything right now. I wanted to try it with an oversized, super soft sweater to really max out on the lux fabric factor.

This sweater is in one of fall’s big colors: chocolate brown. Where we’ve seen tans and camels at the forefront in seasons past, this season is all about this rich, milk chocolate hue. I love this sweater from Splendid (it also comes in ivory) because it combines a bias cut with short sleeves. This really balances things out and keeps you from overheating whilst helping baste the turkey or whip potatoes on Thanksgiving day.

To add some sass, I chose a snakeskin statement boot. These boots have been part of some of my favorite outfits, from a scarf print dress and leather jacket combo to punctuating the perfect slouchy sweater dress. They’re fun and loud, but somehow stay in the neutral fam so they go with most of my closet.

Worried about breaking the style rule of not mixing brown and black? Never fear. We tossed that old rule right out the window years ago, and don’t let anyone tell you that can’t mix neutrals!

Another perk of an outfit that incorporates a satin skirt: you stay breezy. I mentioned hot Thanksgiving kitchens earlier in the post, but isn’t that the truth? Even if it’s freezing outside on Turkey Day, I’m always flirting with breaking a sweat as I help transfer things in and out of the oven or stand over the stove. A satin skirt will help keep me cool!

  1. Ooh! The individual pieces are nice but together they’re terrific. Great combination. Your sartorial eye sees things the rest of us are blind to. Happy Thanksgiving, pal.

  2. I love wearing chocolate brown! And I’ve always liked it with black (I think my favourite combo is with teal or orange). You look absolutely stunning, Ashley.
    Happy Thanksgiving!

    1. Brown really is a fun neutral to play with- it’s just as versatile as black in most cases, I think! Thanks for swinging by, Suzy!

  3. Such a chic outfit! You look stunning Ashley! Chocolate is a neutral and my favourite flavour–goes well with black–I don’t agree with that old rule either. Love the boots!
