Confession: I’m 5’5 and pretty bitter about it. I’ve always wanted to be just a bit taller– from my high school days on the volleyball court to today when I watch models come down the catwalk, making anything look amazing on their tall frames. However, the road for short girls is paved with tricks to look longer and leaner. Take a pair of flared denim (which are in for fall in a major way) and a wedged sandal: instant legs for days. A simple tee with a longline vest layered over the top has an additional lengthening effect. (You may have spotted this look last week on my Instagram. Hello, Casual Friday!) Fun gold accessories in the form of a cool collar necklace and a cuff with coral accents gave this jeans-and-a-tee basic outfit a bit of oomph.

I’ll take all the lengthening I can get– another reason I’m pleasantly surprised flared denim is back with a vengeance. Pair those puppies with a pump or a wedge, and boom! Instant Tall Girl effect.

  10. I don’t think 5’5″ is that short. Funny I always wish I could be around 5’5′ to 5’6″, why? Because then you can wear heels and be 5’8″ or 5’9″. I am just under 5’8″ so if I wear 3 inch heels then I am almost 6 feet tall which I have no desire to be this height. I think being between 5’5″ and 5′ 6″ is the perfect height to be.

  18. I have to admit, I’m a even a bit shorter then you. I know how you feel. I think no matter what size you are if you have a height you can pull of pretty much anything. Well when it comes to petite ladies, it’s always struggle to find something what doesn’t swallow. Especially I struggle with coats and fur vests. You have styled wonderful look.

  20. I’m 5′ 4″, so I feel your pain on being short! I think the outfit you’ve created is great for adding height and the coral is a perfect match for you. I love the necklaces, they’ve got great shape and style!

  25. Well you have an inch on me. I am only 5’4 and I HATE it. I always wanted to be taller. But those jeans definitely make you a tall girl! Lookin’ good friend. Obviously I need to invest in some flares so I can be a faux tall girl too!

  27. Girl, you’re tall by my standards! 😉 Flared jeans definitely make us look taller as well as longline vests and sometimes longline jackets. My thigh-high trench also does a good job in lengthening. So many tricks out there for us – we just have to take advantage of them!
