Little Black Smocked Dress.

The easiest dress type for spring and summer: the little black smocked dress.

Hello, little black smocked dress! I’m in love with this puffy sleeve + square neckline combination. It’s very 90s, for one, and it’s also really flattering. You get a nice swathe of chest without cleavage (time and place– sometimes you’re just not in the mood for major cleave and that’s fine). It plays up the collarbones– a very underrated feature, I believe.

The smocking detail is fun and creates a nice shape without being too constrictive. I love the way it contrasts against the romance of those sleeves and the floaty factor of the skirt. Oh, and it’s a steal at $18. (The longer version is here if you’re a maxi dress kind of girl.)

I wore this little black smocked dress with a new pair of nude sandals (similar versions here and here) to lengthen the leg line. Really into a block heel– on-trend and very easy to walk in. No jewelry, no fuss, just a nice pair of oversized black sunnies and hair that probably hadn’t been washed in the better part of a week. Welcome to blog shoots in quarantine!

Dresses like these are just so easy; you throw ’em on and go. Add a dainty necklace if you like, but the neckline works on its own. Throw a denim jacket over the top if you’re chilly, or swap out the heeled sandal for a cute, slim sneaker and you’re still just as stylish. Come summer, this dress can pull double duty as a swimsuit cover-up. Ah, the options! All for under a $20, brilliant.

  3. I totally agree that smocking is underrated – it’s so beautiful on dresses and I am loving this style. Sexy but not showing too much cleavage – how good is that? You look fabulous as always, Ashley!
