Extra LSR: Recording with the Can City Podcast Fellas.

That podcast life with Can City.

I’ve been lucky enough to be on the Can City podcast a few times over the last year or so. Can City is a KC-based show run by three cool guys: Matt, Josh, and Kyle. (They, however, refer to themselves as “oddballs.”) The podcast’s name comes from the way Kansas Citians pronounce the name of our city. (This is true; I can attest I shave off the “sass” portion of “Kansas” when telling people where I’m from.)

I was initially on as a featured guest, then as a guest host during a Kansas City Fashion Week-themed episode, and more recently filling in for Kyle when he was on vacation.

I had never done a podcast before meeting these fellas. I was honestly floored they wanted to interview me in the first place, and I keep coming back as a guest host because we just have too much fun. It’s a blast– the guys are really funny, so I pretty much laugh through an hour of recording. In the latest episode, we covered a few things happening in the news + pop culture (Space X, the Snapchat redesign, the Tom Hardy Venom trailer). We also get into topics such as the keto diet (and unwanted after-effects, ha), how we feel about cruises, and Josh maybe-sorta bugging my house. (Laughs all around!) You can listen to the episode here.

What I love about Can City is it’s very down to earth; while the guys have a professional setup (those headphones are serious business), most episodes are recorded in the comfort of Matt’s basement. So we’re all just sitting around a coffee table having a chat, except we’ve got microphones in front of us and are surrounded by cords and sound equipment.

I made a joke about this my first time on the show; not knowing the guys personally or having heard Can City prior, I told them it was very weird to be invited to some dude’s basement to “record a podcast,” so I needed to do some research to make sure these boys were legit first (lest I end up on a missing person’s list). Of course, the boys ended up being totally above board, and I had such a blast I’ve been back on several times.

I thought I’d share some behind-the-scenes snaps + videos of my most recent run with the Can City boys.

You see what I mean about the cozy vibe? It’s a living room with all the cords, mics, and a really cute cat who decided to sit by me for about half the episode.

I hope you enjoyed this little peek behind the podcast curtain. If you listen to podcasts, let me know your faves in the comments! And if you haven’t already, you should definitely give the Can City podcast a listen.

  1. Eek, this was so exciting and I loved hearing your precious voice and seeing your cute dimple. Crazy they do this in their basement. I was in a studio on a radio show once but man, this is so much more relaxed! LOVE! You did good girl!

    1. You’re so kind, Andrea! I know- they have such a cool set-up, although I was definitely like, “Wait- what?” at first because I wasn’t familiar with podcasting.

  2. How fun! And that would also be terrifying for me!! I would probably say something insane / completely inappropriate / stupid. Bet you did an amazing job!

  4. This was such a fun post. I loved watching the video clips. You did so well! You sound like a natural on their podcast. And I would have done my research as well. Two guys want me to meet them in their basement for a “podcast” — yeah…OK, lol.

  5. I just got asked to be a special guest on a podcast and I’m more than excited and of course a little nervous. Now I have to check out Can City Podcast. Of course, you killed it, Ashley !!! Those leggings are everything.
