A Bright Plaid Car Coat for Early Spring with KC Homes & Style.

Flirting with spring while staying warm in a two-tone plaid car coat.

Ah, March! That time of year when we’re relieved to have made it through February and excited about spring, but it’s weeks and weeks away. As winter lingers, outfitting becomes about hinting at spring without risking hypothermia. To solve this, I like to add lightweight outerwear in super bright colors for those winter-to-spring days. Case in point: a bright plaid car coat.

The car coat is a good March and April option; the longer length is excellent for blocking blustery winds, but it’s generally not as heavy as your winter parkas and maxi coats. Make it a bright plaid car coat with a two-tone color block situation, and you’ve got yourself a statement piece. All that color feels like spring has sprung, but you stay comfy and warm.

I trotted this coat out for the spring issue of KC Homes & Style, keeping the rest of the outfit fitted and basic. High-waisted skinny jeans (old faves) and a white body suit (an Amazon score) achieved two things: acted a base layer that didn’t distract from that killer print and provided contrast to all the volume in the coat. As much as I’m game for slouchy these days, you have to add balance with fitted pieces if you don’t want to lose your shape.

The final touch? A pair of loud fuchsia pumps. (Similar versions here and here.) I wanted to pull out a color of the coat and match a shoe to it, and what says spring quite like pink? Game on. Plus a pump added some length and height to this 5’5 body; a longer coat can make me look shorter than I am, so adding a few inches via these suede heels is another way to balance things out.

This coat will work over short and sassy spring dresses later in the season, or as a way to really add some punch to a neutral matching athleisure set when running weekend errands. It makes such a statement– two loud prints in one coat? You’re bound to pull a few looks.

Episode 8 of The Adults Aren’t Alright: Maintaining Your Identity While Being a Mom.

Bringing my best friend of over 20 years on the podcast this episode because she’s a mother who fiercely protects her own identity while balancing motherhood. (No small feat!) I deeply admire Lauren’s approach to motherhood because it bucks the societal standard that you give up who you are in service of being a mom.

Lauren loves her girls (of course she does!) but maintains her sense of self in the process, including having a fulfilling career outside the home. We also chat about body image issues because society puts so much pressure and expectation on what a woman’s body “should” look like at all stages: not pregnant, pregnant, post-pregnancy. It’s a great discussion!

  1. Ashley, this coat is absolutely magnificent! And I think you nailed the styling with skinny jeans and a bodysuit to let the coat really speak! Fabulous shoes, too. This coat is going to be fun to play with this spring, I’m sure!

  2. This is a great coat indeed! So fun with the bright plaids and contrasting colors and two toned design. The purple pumps are perfection and really bring the look together. I so need to get some bodysuits just hope I can find one that fits a long torso/inseam.
