Protecting Our Oceans with adidas.

How I do my part to protect our oceans and the environment.

*This post is in partnership with adidas; all thoughts + opinions are my own.

Today I’m celebrating World Oceans Day (coming up on June 8) with my pals at adidas. They’ve launched a line made from ocean plastic– you heard me, ocean plastic– to help keep you stylish and clean up our oceans. Why should we be concerned with protecting our oceans?

There’s a lot of us on the planet (currently around 7.34 billion) and we produce a lot of trash. Think about what you throw away in a day, or in a week– then think about your friends, your neighbors, your city. The average American throws away over 1600 pounds of trash each year. And a lot of that trash ends up in our oceans.

Ocean plastic pollution is a big deal. It kills marine life, contaminates the water, and ends up destroying beaches.

I like to put my money where my mouth is, so whenever possible I like to invest in environmentally-conscious clothing. My friends at feel the same way, so they’re protecting our oceans with their Parley line. In partnering with Parley for the Oceans, adidas recycles and reformulates ocean plastic waste into sneakers and athletic gear. I personally love  and ; perfect for an early summer run! Style that saves the planet? I’m game.

This tank feels amazing– just like any other lightweight, moisture-wicking workout top. I never would’ve known it was made from recycled ocean plastic! Pretty genius, adidas.

I’ve been paying attention to the way plastic use impacts our environment and have been making an effort to adopt practices that minimize plastic, maximize recycling efforts, and supports businesses with environmentally-conscious practices. Here are some life hacks to green up your routine:

  • Recycle, recycle, recycle! Investigate whether a piece of plastic is able to be recycled (this chart is pretty handy) and if it can, make sure it ends up in a recycling bin vs. a trash can. We also make weekly trips to our local recycling center to drop off glass and large cardboard boxes (all those online shipping deliveries add up).
  • Eliminate the use of plastic straws whenever possible. Amazon has a ton of non-plastic options you can use over and over again. I also carry a collapsible + reusable straw in my purse for use at restaurants.
  • Get rid of throwaway plastic containers and invest in glass. These are killer for meal prepping and can go in the dishwasher and microwave. The lids are BPA-free, too.
  • Keep reusable shopping bags in the car for easy-grabbing. I have a stack in my trunk that prevents me from needing plastic bags when I go to the grocery store or on a Target run. You can also collect old plastic bags and recycle them; typically major grocery stores and stores like Walmart and Target have collection bins outside for plastic bags.

Additionally, I’ve started paying attention to what I flush down the toilet or rinse down the sink via my beauty products. For example, I just learned that roughly 14 billion contact lenses are thrown away each year, which amounts to over 440,000 lbs of plastic that can eventually find its way into our oceans via runoff. Can you imagine?! A small contact lens here and there doesn’t seem like much, but when you extrapolate it worldwide, that adds up to a ton of harmful waste. It’s amazing small tweaks like properly disposing of a contact lens vs. washing it down the sink can help the environment.

Those beauty wipes and face masks we’re all so fond of aren’t great for the environment, either. I’ve been looking for biodegradable options– like these face wipes– to make swaps in my beauty routine.

The changes I’ve shared above are small and easy to fold into your daily life, which I think is key for sustainability. Simple, easy changes we can all do that end up protecting our oceans (and the planet!) in a major way. But you don’t have to stay small– you can go big, too:

  • At-home composting. My boyfriend and I have kicked around the idea of starting to compost our organic materials (think food scraps, plant trimmings) vs. throwing them away (where they’ll end up in a landfill). I like this one because it’s all-black and will tuck away nicely under the deck without becoming an eyesore.
  • Invest in energy-efficient appliances. Conserving energy is a good thing for both the planet and your wallet. We made sure our new washer, dryer, and fridge were all energy efficient when we moved into our new space. Thankfully, the people who had renovated it before we moved in installed an energy-efficient HVAC, dishwasher, stove, and microwave. Going green, baby!
  • Eat more plants. Plant-based agriculture requires less water and resources than raising animals. Animal agriculture also produces a huge amount of methane gas, which contributes to global warming. Even doing a Meatless Monday or going vegan a few times a week can help. (Bonus: it’s really good for your health, too.)

I think as we move further into this century, shopping with environmentally-conscious companies like adidas is going to become increasingly important. Protecting our oceans is one of te keys to keeping the Earth a viable place for us to live. Are you trying to be kinder to the environment? What are your tips?

    1. It’s totally a process- little changes like the contact lenses are something I never would’ve thought about had I not stumbled on the info researching this article!

  4. These are wonderful tips and ones we use everyday! We fill up our recycling bin way more than our trash which I think is a success! The thought of wearing athletic gear made from recycled plastic is such an awesome idea!

  5. Such an important message! Your suggestions for pro-environmental action are smart and easy to incorporate into our lives. Plus, these clothes are adorable. Great post!

    1. Thank you so much! I think tackling small changes first is so key- and if we’re all doing a little something, we’re making a big impact!

  6. Great message! Didn’t know that reusable straws existed. More bans on plastic packaging are coming up in Europe and it’s a good thing. Looking forward to people having to comply with a more environmental-friendly lifestyle.

  7. Such an important cause to support! I wouldn’t even think that clothing could be made out of recycled plastic, wow! The pollution has gotten so bad, that I’ve heard it’s contaminated the seafood and of course we eat it and are essentially ingesting plastic. It’s crazy. I’m glad to know a brand I personally love as well is supporting this cause. I’ll have to consider shopping this particular line. Thanks for sharing, girl!
