A Navy Necktie with Sneakers and Wide-leg Cargos.

Corporate core has made its comeback.

I’m all in on the return of workwear-inspired fashion. Trousers, tailored vests, loafers, and blazers are all in heavy rotation— and not just for the office. These tailored staples provide some polish to everyday looks. One accessory I hadn’t yet taken for a spin? A classic necktie. And the May issue of KC Homes and Style seemed like the perfect time to try.

Rather than shop for one, I did what any resourceful fashion-lover would do: I raided my dad’s closet. This navy and white Swiss dot necktie felt both timeless and fresh. (Full disclosure: I also enlisted him to tie it because that is not a skill set I have.)

To style it, I went with a baby blue button-up. This version is cropped and has vented layer, which makes it feel so much more modern than your standard button-up. I added a pair of wide-leg navy trousers for that tonal, all-blue moment I’ll never tire of. (Bonus: they’re cargos!)

Instead of leaning into the expected pump, I finished the outfit with a pair of black and white Air Force 1’s. It’s the kind of contrast I love—sharp up top, relaxed down below.

Not only did I wear this outfit in the new issue of Kansas City Homes & Style, but I also wore it to the office and then out to drinks after. It worked effortlessly in all venues! (You can read the digital edition of Homes & Style here.) I got quite a few comments on the tie (my workplace is pretty business casual, so neckties aren’t really a thing). It was certainly a conversation starter!

  1. What a cool outfit Ashley, you look incredible!! I haven’t seen a cropped version of a button-up before, but it really elevates this look and the tie too! I’m with you on the tie…I have never tied a tie before, haha!

Wishing you a wonderful rest of your week/upcoming weekend, friend! 🙂

    1. Isn’t this button-up cool? I love the cropped feature, too!

Thanks so much for swinging by, Ashley- hope you have a lovely holiday weekend ahead!

  2. Definitely fabulous from every angle. Did you tie the tie yourself?? I have one that I just slide over my head because I can never remember how it’s done.

  3. I love how the blue cargo pants add such a youthful and fun vibe to this look. The cropped blue shirt also adds something extra. The classical dad tie is a perfect contrast with the modernism of the cargo pants and the cropped shirt. This kind of mix of professional and urban street chic is fabulous.

You look beautiful and fresh! Such a winning smile! I love your hair.

  4. Charming! I love borrowing masculine pieces: it always ends up emphasizing the wearer’s natural femininity. You look cute as a button here — and the fact that the tie came from your dad’s collection makes it extra special.

Hope you’re well and happy. I missed you during my recent prolonged absence. (I was in the hospital for four months.)
