Send summer off right with some major granddad vibes.

Labor Day weekend is this weekend (where did summer go?!) and we all need a Labor Day outfit. Do you know that quintessential 90s grandpa-on-vacation outfit? Floral/palm/Hawaiin shirt, jorts, a straw hat (often with an attached strap to wear it down the back), and super chunky (read: sturdy, great for walking) sneakers? Yep, that’s the vibe here. I’m paying homage to all those Boomers and Traditionalists on a Carnival cruise with this look.
I started with the cute palm print shirt from Kindred Shops. I loved the overall blousy nature and the cute-but-not-revealing tie at the hem. I immediately wanted to style it as described above, so I paired the top with some slouchy denim shorts. (A total Summer 2019 theme for me.) Now, these aren’t exactly the Lee jorts of old, but they get the job done.
90s dad sneakers really anchored the look– and yes, your granddad would approve because they are so comfortable. Super cushy! What I love about these Jeffrey Campbell’s is the visible uptick in the sole at the arch of the foot; this makes your legs look long + lean. The sneakers are heavy, sure, but your legs don’t have to appear that way.
A summer hat– complete with strap!– completed the look. (I wound mine around the hat here.)
So how did I do? Am I your granddad on vacay yet?
Shop the look:
This is a solid Labor Day outfit for so many reasons. One (and probably the most important): it’s comfortable. Two: it’s lightweight (except for the sole of those sneakers, of course), so you stay cool in the end-of-summer sun. Three: it’s versatile, so you can wear it to the family barbecue or out with your pals for a final summer hurrah. Fourth: it’s super and on-trend. No matter how they try to deny it, 90s fashion is a trend that’s sticking around.
That’s not to say this palm print blouse can’t be styled other ways. It would be perfect for the office with a pair of black cigarette trousers and a black blazer over the top. Or with high-waisted dark denim and a pair of strappy heels for a date night outfit. Just because I’m taking it for a geriatric spin doesn’t mean you have to. 😉 That is one of the things I love about the pieces I find at Kindred– they are right in line with what’s in style while staying versatile enough for lots of remixing!

I adore your geriatric spin on this look, Ashley. It’s safe to say you probably look better than all those grandpas out there. 😉 I could definitely see that top in the office and on date night. Love the versatility too!
