Khaki Drop Waist Dress + Tall Boots.

Going neutral in a drop waist dress.

Am I going on safari? Or just to the grocery store? Times are strange and fashion is even more so– it feels like such an event to put on non-loungewear clothes. I snagged this khaki drop waist dress from H&M pre-quarantine with the hopes of styling it in line with the utilitarian chic trend.

Now that I’m working from home through at least the end of the month, I’ve taken to the side of my house to shoot outfits. I pulled this dress off the rack in my closet immediately on a recent shoot– it was time for it to make its debut.

I wanted a totally khaki vibe, so I paired with those tall slouchy boots I’m so fond of. They add some coverage and warmth; perfect for those cooler spring days where it feels too soon for an open toe.

This dress has some serious volume (it hides all those shelter-in-place-eat-everything-in-sight habits) while still maintaining some structure. The Victorian cuffs contrast really nicely against the puffy sleeves and the flared pleats are a fun touch.

The model via the H&M site is actually wearing this as a tunic (not a dress) with jeans– another cool styling option. If you’re short like me and, you know, not a super lean model, I’d make sure the jeans were on the skinny side and you wore a shoe with a substantial heel to lengthen your body.

Later in the summer, I’m picturing this khaki drop waist dress with a simple flat leather sandal. Maybe I’ll unbutton those cuffs and see about rolling the sleeves– that could create an interesting effect, right? Ideas, ideas.

    1. I am really curious to see how it’ll look on me as a tunic with skinny jeans- I’m only 5’5, so it will definitely require a shoe with some height. 😉

  1. Terrific boots. And nice to see a slice of your abode.

Many fashion bloggers seem to have stopped/slowed posts due to limits on going outside. The hardy few persisting get my respect. You’re among them!

    1. Well, I’m very lucky that to shoot I don’t have to go far (like outside my house) or to places where people don’t frequent- I can obey social distancing and also snap a few shots! 🙂

  2. Haha I have the opposite problem, so many “dresses” on me I have to wear at tops. I am a fairly small size and almost 5’8″ so they are always way to short unless a midi or maxi. This tunic looks great on you. I saw a parachute dress similar to this in Zara that I thought about getting.

    1. You’ve got some height, I love it! I’m just 5’5, so a lot of things are longer/too long on me. Aren’t you loving all the volume? Really fun to play with. 🙂 You should snag that Zara dress!

    1. The only dressing up I really do is for shoots, haha! And these boots are definitely proving to be all-season jams!

    1. Haha, I was a little surprised to see the fit model wearing it as a top with jeans on the website- but hey, maybe I could with a pair of super high heels? 😉

  3. This dress has so much personality. I really like how volume, flounces and statement sleeves add so much femininity to some styles we’re seeing now. You’ll have to let us know how the “care” is. Do you have to iron it? I’m looking forward to your summer versions!

    1. Doesn’t it just have a ton of personality?! Totally agree.
And re: care, it does tend to wrinkle easily, but I don’t have to iron it. I use a wrinkle release spray and that gets the job done! I did give it a good steam once I pulled it out of the package. 🙂

  4. Thanks for the reminder to hit the H&M site. It’s been a while. They have such great pieces, including this adorable dress. Love the monochromatic look. Thanks for linking up with us and have a great day! XO

  5. I absolutely love the way you styled this outfit! The boots are so chic! Thanks for sharing! 🙂
