‘Tis the season to bundle up.
Black, navy, and gray coats are fine ‘n dandy, but there’s something really fun about a particularly loud piece of outerwear. Take this plaid wool coat from ASOS: it serves all the functions but the cream + pastel check adds a bit extra. I love the longer length, tooâ anything to fight winter off. Couple it with a huge knit scarf (am I venturing into Lenny Kravitz territory?) and I think I found one of my fave stay-cozy combos.

The Vanity: Bio-Oil.
I’m a bit of a human freckle; Anglo-Saxon roots and all that. I spent my childhood summers running, biking, and swimming outside in the sun, only using SPF when my mother threatened my life. (The horror. I’m a sunscreen freak now, just so we’re clear.)
The combo of genetics and lackadaisical sun protection practices means I have some sun damage to account for as an adult. I’m religious about a yearly trip to my dermatologist for a skin check and the subsequent removal of any spot that has gone rogue, darkened, or become irregular. I’m all for this, but the removal leaves behind scars. And let’s not forget my knee surgery last month, which left me with three little scars around my knee as a reminder that menisci are not invincible.
I started using Bio-Oil several years ago when I had a particularly annoying-but-tiny black mutant freckle removed from my bicep. The scar was flat but had a purple tint to it, and I started hunting around for something that would help in fading the scar. I had used Mederma before with decent results, but picked up some Bio-Oil to add to the regime after a friend recommended it.
I started rubbing just a little oil on the scar a few times each day. The combination of the massage (key in breaking down scar tissue and promoting blood flow to the area) and the oil really helped fade the scar faster than if I would have just left it alone.
Bio-Oil has a several plant-based oils (lavender, calendula, rosemary, and chamomile) and vitamins A and E. I find it to be really moisturizing and fast-absorbing. I only use a tiny bit, massage it into the scar until it’s mostly absorbed, and then rub the rest on my cuticles or onto my lips to give them a bit of a moisture boost.
The product comes in several sizes: 6.7 oz., 4 oz., and 2 oz. A 2 oz. bottle has last me over a year (with almost daily use) and cost right around $10. Not bad, not bad.
Everyone is different, so the way one scars and heals will differ, also. For me, many of my scars tend to turn purple (super cool, I’m like Grimace), while other people have a tendency to keloid, and some heal quickly and without issue, etc. This may mean you’ll run into products that work wonders for you, while don’t do a thing for someone else. Beauty product hunting is trial and error.
If you have very sensitive skin, I would do a patch test before applying Bio-Oil more liberally. A little bit goes a long way, mind you. Also, check the ingredients list if you have any skin allergies to make sure you’re in the clear.

I love Bio-Oil and I swear out of all of my friends, I’m the only one who uses it! It’s helped me with a lot of little scars. I don’t keloid, thank God, but my scars do turn a little purple like you mentioned yours do. And I think the massage and Bio-Oil really help! Great post!
