A Proper Fit.

Have you ever been fitted for a bra?

I had been fitted on the floors of various Victoria’s Secrets before, but I had never had a one-on-one appointment with a dedicated fit specialist– someone who could size me up just by taking a quick peek at me in just my bra. My friend Emily works at a local full-service lingerie boutique called clair de lune. Such a cute little space– easy-going, comfortable atmosphere with huge range of sizes (28-52 band and cups A-K) and an impressive stock of lingerie, everyday bras, and panties almost too cute to cover up.

The right bra can make an outfit fit better and do wonders for how you feel both fully-clothed and dressed down. As Emily quickly pointed out to me after assessing my size, I had been wearing the wrong size bra for years. (This happens more often than you think! The staff at clair de lune estimate almost 90% of the women they initially fit have been wearing the wrong size bra.) The philosophy: you should buy a bra and wear it on the loosest hook (I had traditionally been a middle-hook girl), and then over time as the bra breaks in/stretches, you move to a tighter hook. Better fit, better look, more comfortable, happy boobs. All good things, yes? I mean, who doesn’t love a happy boob?

I ended up with quite the lingerie overhaul. Both everyday bras and gorgeous, hand-sewn lace pieces.

Black- Marlies Dekkers; Navy Polka Dot and Blue Poppy- Stella McCartney

Mesh Set and Lace Set- Aubade

For my Kansas City ladies, I recommend you hit clair de lune and get yourself fitted. It’s also a great source for maternity and nursing bras, lingerie, sleepwear, sports bras and hosiery. A little something for everyone. πŸ™‚

From STL? clair de lune is expanding and plan to open up shop around August 15th.

For my non-local readers, google around for a small boutique and make an appointment with someone who knows how to do aΒ bra fitting. You won’t be sorry!

*I received a discount on my purchases at clair de lune; thoughts and opinions are my own.

  1. Just lovely!

I actually got fitted a few years ago and it completely changed the way all of my clothes looked because I had been wearing the wrong size bra! I had sized the band way too big, and wasn’t getting enough support.

Great post- every girl should go and get fitted! πŸ™‚

  2. These are beautiful! It’s definitely easy to wear the wrong size – I just recently heard the tidbit on wearing it on the loosest hook. Good to know for future reference!

  3. That sounds like such a good idea, the few times I’ve been sized at Victoria’s Secret they have been wayyy off with my bra size. I know this post hadn’t said anything about a strapless bra – but I just discovered an amazing one: the Spanx cha cha strapless bra is absolutely amazing. I know sometimes people wear a strapless that is their cup size and it ends up falling off anyway, but spanx bras don’t…theyre fantastic! Just some easy advice from one fashion gal to the next πŸ˜‰ xo

  4. How many people get to say they’ve been in Ashley’s lingerie? πŸ™‚ Haha, love this post! A good fitting is great!

  5. really start on the longest hook then move inward i had no idea, i guess that makes sense the fabric will stretch and then you move, but i didn’t know that, thanks for sharing!

  6. Such pretty bras! I’ve never been fit by a specialist, but I was wearing the wrong band size for a while. I have a tiny rib cage so I always have to get 30 (or 32 usually since many brands don’t make 30s) and then a larger cup. It’s so frustrating! Glad to hear about places like this that make the process easier!

  7. Everyone loves a happy boob! You’re too funny!! We have a similar store called Braserie, Dearie! I have never been, but know I should. You scored some nice pieces!! I”m sure your hubs is happy about those purchases πŸ˜‰

  8. I just read another article on this yesterday… maybe the universe is trying to tell me something?!
Love all your new pieces- so pretty!

  9. Great post! And very good advice- don’t forget about the underthings just because they’re usually hidden!

  10. Love this post, Ash! I live RIGHT by this boutique, so I think I’m going to go this weekend! πŸ˜€

  11. haha love the happy boob part. and i’m probably one of those that have the wrong size- i always thought you put it on the last hook and move it tighter as it stretches! i love the hail you got- they’re all so different and so so pretty!
