Fall is almost here and I’m itching to break out the seasonal pieces– the weather, on the other hand, isn’t exactly cooperating. I don’t know why I’m surprised; September is rarely anything but a sweatbox in KC. So I have to get my autumn style kicks for the latest issue of KC Homes & Style another way: through tones and shoe choices instead of knits and layers. And it all starts with this jewel tone satin shirt dress.

The dress is perfect for walking that summer-to-fall transition: the color, length, and longer sleeves make it fall-friendly. But the overall weight– a breezy but substantial satin– is just right for a September day with temps in the 80s. Instead of belting this satin shirt dress with the matching tie, I looped on a statement belt. I love the wrap feature and that big gold buckle, and it helped add some drama to the dress.

The shoe choice was another autumn-adjacent decision. I could’ve gone full-flown fall and done a tall boot, but again, too hot. An ankle boot to the rescue! These gray croc versions really brought the edge with their block heel, Western shape, and super sharp toe.

Are you in the same seasonal boat as me and looking to add some autumn vibes to your wardrobe? Start choosing those deep, rich tones we’re used to seeing once summer fades. Think burgundies, royal purples, pumpkin-spiced oranges, and forest greens. And work a boot or two into your outfits! They help anchor your look in a cooler season than, let’s say, a sandal or even a simple sneaker.

    1. Yes, I’m with you- I’m starting to choose more fall tones, and add a cardigan here and there where I can- it hasn’t quite cooled off enough here yet for my taste, but I’m trying! Haha. Thanks, Mireille!

  1. Beautiful outfit. It comes together nicely and the choice of shoes is inspired. The belt is also exceptional.

I didn’t know KC stays hot in September. New York cools off this month and becomes ideal with 70-degree temps. Maybe you should head over here for a visit!

    1. Oooh, you’re so lucky NY cools off in September. The 70s sound lovely! Today we were at 87 degrees, haha. It’ll start to cool off (a bit) at the end of the month, but it’s not until October that it feels like fall. Thank you so much for swinging by!

  2. I used to have a satin shirt dress in the 1980’s, Ha! I do have a Marimekko fleece shirt dress now….so I guess it all just comes back in fashion one way or another….#WowonWednedsay

  3. What a great dress, it looks so lux, particularly with the statement belt and sunglasses. I love the Teal color. It suits nearly everyone and is perfect for autumn/fall. Thanks for linking at Is This Mutton.

  4. That belt has my heart. And I know exactly what you mean about needing something lightweight even now.
I have a totally unrelated question…tell me about how you refresh your curly hair on day 2 and 3 after washing it?? I’m struggling so much and yours looks amazing,

    1. You are so kind, Jodie! So here’s what I do- I wet my hair down (either a quick dunk in the shower or I use a spray bottle) and then scrunch some additional wave or curl foam in it to redefine the curls. My hair is really porus and gets frizzy easily (plus it’s super humid in KC in the summer) and this method seems to help!

    1. Thank you, babe! And yes, September is definitely still summer-like for KC. We’re getting up to nearly 90 today, oy vey. Ready for fall!

  5. You’re making a great case for transitioning into fall fashion, even when the weather hasn’t caught up yet! The jewel tone satin shirt dress is a perfect compromise, especially with that dramatic statement belt and the sleek gray ankle boots. It’s all about balancing fall vibes while keeping cool, and your choice to focus on color and accessories instead of heavy layers is spot on for those unpredictable September days.

The mix of jewel tones and edgy footwear strikes that ideal in-between-season look, and I love the idea of bringing in some autumn energy without overheating. Plus, the gold buckle and croc-textured boots add a little bit of personality and flair to the ensemble, making it both practical and chic for this tricky time of year. Great style tips for those of us itching to dive into fall, but not quite ready for boots and scarves!

  6. What a stunning outfit choice! The rich teal satin shirt dress is a the perfect piece to transition from summer to fall, especially with its elegant color and comfortable fit. It’s great to hear how you’re creatively navigating the warm September weather while still embracing the fall vibe.

  7. That dress looks so good! I’m trying to spruce up my fall wardrobe right now. I’m a carpet cleaner as a profession so I don’t always get to dress as cute as I like, but your blog has given me such great ideas for post work outfits! Can’t wait to check out more.
