A Blazer with Cutoff Shorts for SPACES.

You’ll score serious style points in a blazer with cutoff shorts.

Ohhhh, August. You’re blazing hot, but all the stores are packed with sweaters and every ad is something back-to-school related. We’re all a little summer-weary, but not quite ready to pile on the cable knit. How do you walk this seasonal tightrope? A blazer with cutoff shorts, that’s how. And I’m showing you how to do it in the August issue of Kansas City SPACES.

Now, a blazer with cutoff shorts might seem like two opposing trends: you’re used to seeing a blazer in more formal settings (offices and such) and cutoffs are classic weekend outfitting material. But when you pair ’em together, you get this cool off-duty street style mix and a mega closet stretch. (Because who says you can only wear those blazers during the workweek?)

I’m wearing a pink linen Loft blazer (it’s sold out, but I love this one and this one) and these Agolde cutoff shorts. Yes, they’re pricey. But I’ve had them now for 3 years and they’re still one of my faves. When putting this look together, I chose the blazer because it’s a classic cut in a summertime fabric and the shorts because they are both high-waisted (great for holding things in) and have a roomier thigh opening (so things aren’t too terribly tight). The blazer and cutoff shorts hit at about the same place on my body– which is totally fine. (It would be fine if the blazer were longer, by the way; you just want to avoid anything super cropped.)

The real key to wearing a blazer with cutoff shorts? Two things: keep the top simple and slouchy. I chose a blousy black Portofino shirt from Express (size up for more slouchiness). You want that slouchy blouse half-tucked into the waistband of the cutoff shorts to highlight your waist without anything bodycon.

The second tip for successful outfitting: opt for a heeled sandal over anything flat. (Unless, you know, you have mile-long legs.) Nothing too high, but a sandal with just enough of a heel that it lengthens that leg line. I love these Dolce Vita sandals (you can get ’em here in a pretty polka dot); they strike the right balance between casual and dressy.

    1. Thanks, Rach! I love this blazer with shorts- but it’ll certainly work with more formal/traditional pieces, for sure!

    1. I can’t say enough good things about a blush blazer- and I think while it’s typically a more spring and summer color, it could be really pretty in the fall with a little black dress and boots!

  4. you look stunning in this! Fabulous shorts and a blazer combo. Lovely sandals as well.

I agree with what you said. Blazers are so versatile….they work well even outside the office setting.

    1. They really do! I like breaking them out of their typical office setting and wearing them more casually, for sure. 🙂

    1. You definitely have to avoid extreme weather- if it’s too hot or cold, this outfit definitely doesn’t work, haha. 🙂
