Winter Windblown.

I’m slowly getting used to layering on clothing to brave the elements. Remember summer? When you grabbed your bag and walked out the door in nothing but a simple sundress and flip flops? Now it’s a sweater, boots, scarf, gloves, coat, check, check, check.

While I’m enjoying getting some mileage out of my boot collection again, my hair is not taking the season shift so well. The lack of moisture, cold temperatures, and brisk wind are tough on the tresses. Things can get dry, brittle, dull– and the static isn’t fun for anyone. What to do?

Moisturize. Chapstick/Burt’s/Kiehl’s for the hair:

Winter Hair
1.  Tresemme Smooth Ultra Light Shine Spray ($3)
2. Frederic Fekkai Technician Color Care Mask ($35)
3. Garnier Fructis Triple Nutrition Shampoo, Conditioner and 3-Minute Undo ($4-6)
4. Matrix Biolage Hydratherapie Ultra Hydrating Shampoo and Conditioning Balm ($28 and $38)
5. Frederic Fekkai Brilliant Glossing Cream ($23)
6. Moroccanoil Hydrating Mask and Oil ($33 and $15)

You can start with switching up your shampoo and conditioning regime to something a little more moisturizing. Biolage’s Hydratherapie system is a favorite (4), while Garnier’s new(ish) Triple Nutrition line is a great drugstore find (3).

Deep conditioning once a week can do wonders for thirsty hair. There are a ton of hair masks and conditioning treatments out there– I typically snag one that has avocado oil, olive oil, argan oil, or shea butter in it (or some combination of those miracle oils). Moroccan oil is pretty huge right now, and their Hydrating Mask (6) is definitely on my list of go-to products. I use the Moroccanoil Oil Treatment (6) after a blowout to smooth flyaways and give my ends a little moisture.

For highlighted ladies, Frederic Fekkai’s Technician Color Care Mask is amazing (2) at protecting color-treated hair. Fekkai’s Glossing Cream (5) has plenty of olive oil to hydrate– I work it into still-damp hair before blow-drying. Tresemme’s shine spray (1) is a perfect finishing touch (on the cheap!); it always gives me shine to spare.

What do you use to save your hair from cold, dry winters?

  1. Thanks for the additional ideas! My go-to items are Kiehl’s items, as well! (used to work there, how could I not be hooked?)

I love the Olive Fruit Oil Nourishing Conditioner. It does wonders. And lately, I’ve been using their newer line, the Superbly Smoothing Argan Conditioner. It is lovely as a once a week treatment.

What Kiehl’s products do you use?

  2. OMG, thank you thank you for responding to my request! You are a life saver. Static is evil! ughhh. I’m going to buy Frederic Fekkai’s glossing cream tomorrow. I’ll let you know how it works on me. Loves you!!

  3. Danielle- that’s crazy; I was going to include the Superbly Smooth line by Kiehl’s, but already had my argan-oil-base covered with the Moroccanoil. 🙂

APB- Static IS evil! The Fekkai cream should help. And you’re a Morccanoil addict like me, right? Be a little heavy-handed with the oil on your ends right after your blowout, and it should help with the static, too. Love you!

  4. Love the Biolage Hydratherapie shampoo and conditioner. That is one of the only conditioners that I can use and actually get my fingers through my hair after without any additional leave in conditioner.

Also love the Moroccanoil. Great for tips in the winter. I have found that not only does it help with static but I have also had fewer split ends in the winter when I use it.

Also have the Garnier 3 minute undo- great product for a very afforadable price.

    Love the post!

  5. I like the Organix Moroccan Oil shampoo, and you can get a giant botlte at the Midtown Target for $8, which is awesome. But I’m opposite from you, hairwashing-wise, in that I shampoo maybe once a week (apart from my bangs) and condition like a mofo every day, so I don’t know if it would be moisturizing enough to skip conditioner, but it’s not so harsh that I can’t use it regularly.
