Red Carpet Rundown: 2012 SAGs.

The Screen Actors Guild Awards happened on Sunday. Not an incredibly crazy carpet, although I did find I liked more dresses than I disliked. There were many that only needed a few tweaks to jump to the “best” list. Overall, not a bad showing.

Jumping right in…

The Best:

Kyra Sedgwick in Emilio Pucci. Great body, right? Obviously so, hence the snug dress complete with cutouts. (Of course, Guiliana from E! had to ask, “What do you do to stay fit?” as if one could answer that question with anything but, “Hit the gym on the regular.” What is Kyra supposed to say? “I avoid all foods except butter lettuce and almonds.” Not likely.) Back to the dress: amazing cut, a really nice red– not too berry or matchy-matchy with the carpet, and there’s some orange to it. Looks great on Kyra. Love the casual hair, also. Looked gorgeous.

Jayma Mayes in Reem Acra. Like a starry night sky, yes? Loved this. The bit of a cap sleeve kept it from being too much, despite the collarbone-to-toe sequins. A really sexy choice for Jayma, who has a tendency to play on her small features with cutesy doll dresses or 50’s housewifey gowns. Love this dark charcoal color on her. The hair was good– it was simple, had some height, but didn’t distract. Lovely.

Emily Blunt in Oscar de la Renta. Amazing. The color is killing me– it’s almost neon, and I love it. The SAGs are a little looser than the Globes; you can have more fun with your outfit choice. Love this Oscar on Emily in a very flattering, classic cut (with a sexy slit!) in a bright, super vibrant green. Bold gown; very well played.

Naya Rivera in Naeem Khan. I never thought I’d see Naya on my Best list. Girlfriend tends to have bad red carpet judgement. But this gown is gorgeous. It’s in that very trendy no-color color of wispy gray, and the feather beading is exquisite. Has a nice shape, is sexy without being overly so, and does well to compliment Naya’s killer figure. Finally! A job well done.

Jennifer Carpenter in Emilio Pucci. This is what I’m talking about when I say that the SAGs allow for a little playfulness. Here’s Jennifer in a cocktail-length dress, showing off a great pair of legs and letting the dress’ intricate overlay do most of the talking. Love this. A pretty shade of crimson is interesting against a creamy slip; nude accessories keep everything in balance. Love her hair– totally how ombré should be done, don’t you think?

Amber Heard in Zac Posen. Really liked this. A simple color, a simple fabric, all the interest is invested in cutouts. Might be a little Edward Scissorhands (especially with her tall hair), but I think that’s the point. It’s supposed to be a bit cheeky. It looks killer on her. Very sleek.

Emma Stone in Alexander McQueen. Emma continues to push the fashion envelope. I love that she doesn’t repeat the same silhouette over and over again (Penelope Cruz). This dress is tough to pull off; tea length is not a forgiving hemline, especially for short girls. The shoes are a perfect fit. The clutch is edgy– also McQueen. I love the business happening around the bust, and even the angle the waist takes. All very artful, yet easy to swallow in black.

The Meh:

Lea Michele in Versace. Again with the no-color gray. Not bad here, and I actually really like the bodice. I’m good with the slit; it definitely adds some drama. My main issue here are those budget shoes. The pointed toe is totally wrong here, and those particular shoes are at least a size and a half too big for Ms. Michele’s feet. The leg line is completely ruined– something open toe and in the nude family would’ve served Lea better.

Michelle Williams in Valentino. Ugh, I’m just so bored. Michelle is always doing the column-dress-with-sleeves thing, and I’m over it. Even in pumped-up red, I’m yawning. Even with the asymmetrical shoulder paired with the peek of lace detail. Even, even, even. Step it up for the Oscars, girl.

Shailene Woodley in L’Wren Scott. Almost, SW. Let’s talk about the good: color combo is fresh, I like that the neckline is a little high (good to not oversex them at such a young age, methinks), hair and makeup are perfect. She tried, but she didn’t try. Like pose-hard, get-a-cramp, live-and-die-by-the-flashbulb try. Which I like. Desperate isn’t attractive. What’s bad: that print. Especially when you’re shilling a movie set in Hawaii.

Angelina Jolie in Jenny Packham. Super close. As I’m writing, I’m wondering if I just shouldn’t bump this up to the Best list. But there’s something off about the way the halter top hangs, or maybe it’s the bulk of the draping around the chest. I feel like that particular proportion is off balance. Either the halter should be thicker or the draping should be trimmed along the side. Definitely dig the slinky fabric, and nobody really does Grecian kohl eyes like the Jolie, am I right?

Zoe Saldana in Givenchy. Zoe takes risks, give her that. She doesn’t shy away from weird or avant-garde, which I’m down with. But there’s too much here to squint at; too much that I don’t think works. I’m actually not offended at all by the fact that she’s wearing what appears to be a cotton rib tank under the top– I think that’s fresh. But the neckline of the overlay is just a little too high, and the dotted pattern is a little too bridal. The whole thing in bright white is just a little too bridal, honestly. Don’t mind the business around the waist, or the slit. But those little balls at the bottom look like fancy drapes from 1964, yes? Some Wonder Years business. What we cannot argue about: Zoe’s face. Gorgeous.

The Worst:

Busy Phillips in Simone by Katie Nehra. Um, hi, did you think you were going to a summer BBQ? A picnic in Malibu? Or the People’s Choice Awards? This outfit slams at any of the above. But at the SAGs? Even at the laid-back SAGs, you still have to flex a little. C’mon, Busy.

Jenna Fischer in Max Azria Atelier. Why does Jenna consistently show up looking like a mother of the bride? Please respond in the comments.

Kristen Wiig in Balenciaga. Chokers died in ’97. Officially, I believe. Someone Wikipedia this. And they are not back. This was also the worst showing of the no-color gray (this one is a bit taupe-y mushroom, no?). So over Wiig doing neutrals. Let’s get this girl a color wheel.

Heather Morris in Masai Payan. What in the Britney Spears World Tour hell is this? This is a joke, right? An ill-fitting, totally unflattering joke. HM has a sick body, but the saggy shoulder and leather detail is telling me otherwise. I tend to oppose the opaque-then-SHEER skirt thing that’s been happening lately, and I think you can see why. That skirt is gross. Those silver shoes are crap. And her hair– someone explain this to me. My worst-dressed of the night.

There’s my SAGs coverage… Who did I miss? Are we arguing over Zoe’s dress? Or Angie’s? Let me know.

  1. My thoughts: best = Kyra, so gorgeous! Blah = Michelle Williams, you’re right- soo boring! Worst = Heather Morris, totally wrong!

  2. Jennifer Carpenter needs to eat a sandwich. There’s a thin (heh) line between skinny and emaciated and she has one foot over it, it seems.
That dress is gorgeous, but the way it is hanging (at least in this pic) makes it look too big, which only enhances her wasting-away appearance.

  3. Love your rundowns of the awards shows! You’re always right on. I totally agree that Jayma look beautiful (and different) and that Heather had the worst gown of the night! Who let her wear that?

  4. Michelle Williams totally wears the same dress over and over and OVER!
I love Zoe Saldana shakes it up and is always wearing something interesting.

  5. Michelle Williams’ dress is WAY better than the daisy monstrosity she wore to the Golden Globes last year, so we can all be thankful for that at least.
I’m just holding out hope she’ll show up in something gorgeous like that mustard-colored dress from the ’06 Oscars at this year’s Oscars!

  6. Awesome review! I really thought Zoe looked beautiful, but her dress was just a little too weird for me. Definitely loved Jennifer Carpenter (although sandwich, yes) and Emma Stone. So pretty!

  7. Best- Emily Blunt. What a fabulous color and dress!
Worst- Kristen Wiig. Such a boring, blah color and that choker is horrible!

  8. Zoe looked gorgeous! Her dress was so interesting!

I absolutely hated Jenna Fischer- so boring and you’re right, Mother-of-the-Bride!
