Oh Captain, My Captain.

Despite the fact that I’m landlocked in the middle of the country, I’m a bit of a sailor girl.  (Mostly imagined, but I was born in California… This must count for something.)

I love that yacht club aesthetic– super preppy, slightly androgynous, classic.

Summer is the perfect time to get your sailor on. Some ideas:

Nautical Love

Blue and red are quintessential nautical colors. Lightweight cardigans in this classic color scheme are great options. A simple summer dress in cobalt does the trick, too.

Get yourself a pair of boat shoes. I’m so serious. (Are you thinking 80s Miami Vice? Don’t. It’s not good for you.) My favorite are Sperry’s, but a ton of designers are making them right now. Rock them with a sporty knit dress, cutoff denim, or white capris.

Straw accessories, like a woven tote or a pair of raffia sandals are a nice neutral touch (because too much red and blue makes you look a little too 4th of July). Love me some cute anchor jewelry. Wayfarers are back and aren’t going anywhere soon, so snag a pair. They’re flattering on almost every face shape.

The key is to incorporate a few of the above elements into your outfit (not all, unless you’re steering an actual sailboat while wearing said Overkill Ensemble). Start with a white tank and some denim shorts, then add maybe the striped belt, and anchor studs. Or the blue body-con dress with boat shoes. Or a white mini, white tee, the raffia sandals, and the navy cardigan with the gold buttons.

I could play this game all day. You?

  1. Have always loved this look too….crisp, clean and timeless. Good article. This is a look that any age can pull off.

  2. That cool straw bag would be a perfect beach bag!

I love this post- and the sailor look is so summery! Perfect for this time of year!

  3. Awesome post! I need a few of these pieces in my wardrobe! Where can you get the blue and red cardigan? I’m in love with it!

  4. Thanks everyone for the comments. 🙂

K- it’s by Delia’s. Not sure if it’s still available on the web, but you might be able to find it on the rack at your local store.

  5. Ah! How did I miss this post?! I’m SOO into the nautical look for summer. Something about it just makes me think… Cape Cod? I’ve been rockin’ the Sperry’s on a regular basis. They’re actually really comfortable shoes, nice arch support! Do you know of any place on the web to get a good deal on a pair of Ray Bans?

  6. Carrie- I live in my Sperry’s, seriously. 🙂 I got my Ray Bans from Sunglass Hut when they were running a special, but have you heard of ShadesDaddy.com? They have ’em at a discount. Did a little digging; seems legit. You might check it out!
