Beauty Rut.

I’ve been in this beauty rut for a while now.  Each morning before work, I put on the same face. Peachy cheek, taupe shadow, dark brown liner, black mascara. Lather, rinse, repeat.

While there’s a strong argument that 7 am is far too early for mustering makeup creativity, it’s also likely that laziness is a factor. I’m in that Late Winter Slump. (We chatted about this re: clothes before, yes?)

It’s time to take initiative and shake it up. Where to go for inspiration?

I usually hit the beauty blogs and glossy magazines; they’re a great place for finding something new or different to work into your look.

Whether it’s the how-to’s or the editorial photos, I’ll rip out what I like/want to try and slip it into a binder (7th grade flashback). So handy to pull out and reference on a Monday morning when I’m still sleepy and not in the mood to brainstorm beauty looks. The key is flipping to something work-appropriate (i.e., not a peacock-themed smokey eye).

Beauty blogs are also excellent places to mine ideas from. I love it when a blogger test drives a look and then posts pics of the results— or better yet, posts a how-to for viewers.

New products are always nice. One or two can help get you out of doing the same old, same old. My latest Beauty Lust List:

Beauty Rut

1. Oscar Blandi Pronto Invisible Volumizing Dry Shampoo Spray ($11)
2. Stila Custom Color Blush ($20)
3. Sultra The Bombshell Iron ($130)
4. Laura Mercier Silk Road Eye and Cheek Palette ($48)
5. OPI Do You Think I’m Tex-y? Polish ($8)

My current idea of a hair makeover consists of volumizing dry shampoo (1) and this killer curling clamp-less iron (3). Wind random sections of hair around the wand to create a curls, then add a little powder at the roots to keep the look  slightly-mussed and a a little lived-in. Perfecto!

Nothing says spring like a fuchsia manicure (5) and a pop of pink on the cheeks (2). Stila’s custom blush is a pH-based powder that finds the perfect shade for your skin tone. Fresh and foolproof? I’m game.

Purple is a color I don’t use often enough. This palette from Laura Mercier offers endless purple possibilities (4). A deep smokey purple in the crease, or all over the lid for a more dramatic look.  Another option is a light lavender wash, with a touch of mushroom-y taupe blended in to keep it from being too sweet.

Anyone else in Beauty Sameville with me? What are your tips for busting out?

  1. Awesome post!
I feel the same way too- like I wear the same makeup every single day!
I love that LM palette- really pretty! Never tried purple much, so it would definitely be something different!

    Have a great weekend!

  2. Tutorials YES! I love how to videos!

Going to try some new looks this weekend for sure!

    Great post, girl!

  3. Dry shampoo is one of the best inventions in the world 😀 It saves my bad hair days when my hair is just flat and gross, makes everything instantly so much better. The nail polish is lush, haven’t seen this colour before but it looks amazing. Do you have a picture of it on your nails? I would like to see what it looks like in real life. 🙂

  4. I love that curling iron! With the little bit of wave that I have in my hair I feel like I need to work some specific sections in order to be able to wear it wavy. So this is definitely something I am going to look into!

  5. I feel the same way. But what I do is invest in a good eyeshadow palette with many color options so I’m forced to change my eye look every day. Besides that, I think changing your lipstick or gloss every day can also change your look & even complete it. Dramatic eye=neutral lip, neutral eye=bright pop of color lip.
