December, whoa. Can you believe the end of the year is nearly here? I’m reeling a bit from how fast fall flew by, and now we’re in the holiday season– and in my birthday month!

I do love a plaid shirt, and lumberjack black + red check is a classic. I bought this version at Forever21, and sized it up to amplify that borrowed-from-the-boyfriend feel. Faded black denim felt like a good match, and I grabbed an old pair of classic Michael Kors boots to top off the look.

Do you mix high and low? The shirt retails for less than a $20 spot, while the boots and jeans run considerably higher. I mix and match pieces across price points because it stretches my closet. You can make an affordable score from Forever21 look designer if you style it correctly, am I right? It doesn’t matter how many expensive pieces you have in your closet (or if you have any!); dressing in head-to-toe designer doesn’t a style make. Mix it up! Pairing your high end pieces with your budget steals is a great way to keep your closet fresh.

  7. Mixing expensive designer pieces with more reasonable pieces is excellent fashion advice! So many blogs and magazines push wearing nothing but designer- but not everyone can do that! It’s not feasible for the average person- I love how you make fashion and style more accessible. Great post, Ashley!

  26. Happy birthday month! I am in love with this plaid shirt, Ashley! No joke, I’ve gone to the mall twice this week looking for the perfect plaid shirt with no luck. I didn’t even think to check Forever 21! I agree with you that mixing high and low helps stretch out your closet. It really does help make your inexpensive things look a lot nicer, too!   47. Due to the fact that I am broke and get random nice things from people, I am always having to mix high low. Really though, now that I am used to it, I like the idea of trying to elevate something that isn’t necessarily expensive but making it look so.
